Michel Micombero

Michel Micombero (1940 with Rutovu - July 16th 1983 with Mogadiscio), Lieutenant-general and first president of the Burundi.

Of origin Tutsi, it reverses in 1966, whereas he is captain, the king Ntare V of Burundi and proclaims the republic of which he becomes the president. Founding a true military dictatorship, supported by the sole party UPRONA and the Tutsi community, it physically eliminates as of 1969 the political elite Hutu, then in 1971, represses the Tutsis liberals. In 1972, it massacres between 100.000 and 300.000 Hutus. Falling into a drift extremist, it is reversed in 1976 by the colonel Jean-Baptiste Bagaza and leaves in exile.
