Michel III known as lIvrogne is a Byzantine Empereur born in 840, which reigns of 842 with 867. He succeeds his father the emperor Theophilus at the three years age in 842. In 855, he marries Eudoxie Décapolitaine.
On the other hand the empress completely neglects the education of her son who quickly becomes one discharged. Gears encourages Michel III to lock up Théodora in a convent to only control in 856. Actually it is Bardas which controls leaving its nephew to his wives and its banquets.
Restoration of the worship of the images (843)
His/her mother Théodora initially exerts the reality of the capacity with the assistance of her brother the Patrice Bardas and imposes the final re-establishment of the worship of the images which finishes the crisis iconoclast thus the March 11th 843.
Advised by the Logothète Théoktistos, Théodora however starts terrible persecutions towards the Pauliciens, which were massacred and their confiscated goods; the survivors took refuge near the emir de Malatia, Omar Ibn-Abdullah.
The personal reign (855-867)
The personal reign of Michel III starts after the murder, on its order, on November 20th, 855, of Théoktistos.Incompetent to control, Michel III leaves the government of the businesses to his uncle Bardas, who will appear rather effective besides: under its reign, and the influence of the patriarch of Constantinople Photios, saint Cyrille and saint Méthode begin the evangelization of the Slavic people (towards 860); into 864 the tsar of Bulgaria Boris Ier also converts him with Christianity; militarily Michel III is confronted with a revolt of the Slavic people of the empire, crushed in 849 by the general Théoktistos Vriennon then with the Russian expansion whose fleet is destroyed in 865 by a convenient storm.
As for the Arab expansion in minor Asia it is contained by the great victory of another maternal uncle of the emperor, Petronas (863), and compensates for the defeat of the Byzantine army directed by Michel III in person (860). On the other hand the Crete is not taken again.
New the Favorite of the emperor, Basile the Macedonian, pushes the emperor to get rid of his uncle Bardas in 866. This crime sounded the end of the Dynastie amorienne because Michel III made of his favorite the Co-emperor.
Quickly wearied behavior of Michel III, incompetent to control it, Basile make it assassinate the September 25th 867 by his Asylaion cousin and become only emperor under the name of Basile Ier, putting thus fine at the Dynastie amorienne with the profit of the Dynastie Macedonian. Michel is buried with the monastery of Chrysopolis, on the Adriatique coast.
