Michel Chion , born in 1947 with Creil (France), is Compositeur of Concrete music, Réalisateur, teacher of cinema and critical. He was member of the Groupe of music research (GRM) of 1971 with 1976. He carried out films and vidéos and published 16 works on the sound, the music, the cinema (of which monographs on David Lynch, Jacques Tati or Stanley Kubrick, inter alia).

Biography

After literary and musical studies, it enters in 1970 to the Research center of ORTF, where he is successively assistant of Pierre Schaeffer with the national Academy of music of Paris, realizer-producer of the emissions of GRM, and person in charge of the publications of the Ina-GRM, of which he belongs to 1971 to 1976. It is there that it meets Robert Cahen, type-setter and vidéaste, with which will bind from now on collaboration and friendly relations.

In parallel, it composes in the studios of GRM of the “concrete musics”, whose Requiem (Grand Prix of the disc 1978) and several concrete melodramas, forms dramatic that it inaugurates in 1972 with the prisoner of the sound and continuous with the Temptation of saint Antoine , 1984, while passing by You , 1977-85, and Black night , 1985. One will quote also the wheel, cycles daily newspaper , 1972-85, 24 preludes to the life , Variations and railway Sonate , 1989-91, Crayonnés , 1992, Credo Mambo , 1992, - realized in the music studios & Recherches (Ohain, Belgium) -, Gloria , 1994 - works for which it develops original techniques of realization. One also owes him of the sound musics and designs for films and vidéos.

It opens as theorist a new field: the systematic study of the audio-visual reports/ratios, which he teaches in several centers (in particular at the University of Paris III, where he is associated Professor) and schools of cinema (ESEC, Paris; DAVI, Lausanne), and develops in a whole of five works. Among a score of titles translated in ten languages, he also wrote on Pierre Henry, François Bayle, Charlie Chaplin, Jacques Tati, David Lynch, various subjects of music and cinema, published in reviews French and international and contributed to many dictionaries and encyclopedias. In parallel, it approached the realization with in particular short-measuring Éponine (Price Jean-Vigo, First prices in Clermont-Ferrand, and Montreal). In 1995, he undertakes a Messe of ground audio-video to the CICV Pierre Schaeffer of Montbeliard (France).

After having devoted a Guide of the sound objects to the ideas of Schaeffer, it bases in the listening walker, tests of acoulogy , (Feather editor, 1993), supplemented by Musiques, media, technologies (Flammarion), a theory of the resting sound on the language. It publishes in 1991, thanks to Jerome Noetinger, the art of the sounds fixed , where is in particular proposed, to indicate this music, the return to the name of “concrete music” in its initial direction non-causalist. Its redefinition insists on the effects suitable for “fixing” of the sound, term which it initiates in the place of that of recording.
