Michel Camélat
Michel Camélat (more known under its Gascon name Miquèu Camelat ) (1871, Arrens - 1962, Tarbes) is commercial, playwright, poet and French writer in language Gascon E.
Its life
Born on January 26th 1871 with Arrens, in Bigorre, in the Lavedan, department of the Hautes-Pyrénées, Michel Camélat (Miquèu Camelat) is the only son of a shoe-maker. After secondary studies with the small seminar of Saint-EP-with-Bigorre, he refuses to become priest and must return at his place in 1887 where he devotes himself to the Gascon and his literature. At this point in time he discovers the work of Félibres. In 1890, it obtains a first price of poetry in Félibrée of Tarbes and meets Simin Palay with which it launches in 1893 “Armanac Gascoun”. It then decides to give up the Gascon " lavedanais" of its village for the inhabitant of Béarn who will allow him to be read in all Gascogne. In 1896, it takes part in the foundation of Escolo Gastou Febus which federates Gascon Félibrige, then to that of its review “Reclams de Bearn E Gascounhe” in 1897. It is the year when it Marie with Catherine Augé and settles definitively with Arrens of which he will be the mayor of 1900 with 1904. The couple will have four children, of which two will die in low age. Recognized by Félibrige since the publication of “Beline”, Camélat directs from 1910 to 1914 the Gascon popular semi-monthly “the Ends of the Earth”, with the line plus separatist that “Reclams”. After mobilizebeing mobilized during the First World War, it binds friendship with the poet André Pic. He dies on November 19th 1962 in his daughter with Tarbes.
Its work
Very influenced by Frederic Mistral, Camélat wrote three epopees and dramas in Gascon worms: Beline in 1899, Mourte E Bibe in 1920 and Lole in 1939. Very attracted by the theater, he is also the author of “entertainments” like Griset nouste in 1911, Roubi lou sounadou and With the soft aygue nou-b hidet in 1912 and Lou darrè Calhabari in 1916. Without forgetting its tragedy of Gastou-Febus , written in 1914. He is also the author of poetries and news joined together in the espigue aus known as in 1934 and Cock-fucking in 1937. More of the anthologies devoted to the Gascon literature like Garbe of pouesies in 1928 or Garbe of proses in 1933.
