Michel Cabieu
Michel Cabieu is a sergeant of the militia coastguard of Ouistreham, born in Ouistreham the March 2nd 1730 and died in Ouistreham the November 5th 1804.
Exploit
In 1762, during the War Seven Year old, France and England are again in war. In the night from July 12th to 13rd, the English invade Sallenelles and are about to unload with Ouistreham, when they draw two blows from gun which alert the inhabitants. The latter escape at once. Michel Cabieu goes only vis-a-vis the enemy to try to frighten it. Provided with a drum and a weapon, it makes fire of place in place, orders with its non-existent soldiers to make fire and thus makes accept the English who the French troops are numerous. The intimidated English beat a retreat, giving up an officer that Cabieu had wounded its rifle shots randomly.Gerard de Clussy, deputy of the Apple-brandy, read out these event to the Constituent Assembly the September 4th 1790, by presenting Cabieu to the bar of the Parliament. Oudot, representative of the Apple-brandy, reported them with the national Convention the Thermidor 25 year II.
The general Notch, energy to take his command with Cherbourg, passed by Ouistreham to become acquainted with Cabieu, to which it made gift of his shoulder pads and its sword, which was worth with this last the nickname of " General ".
The commemorative plaque because of weapon of Michel Cabieu reports that it was made general by Convention following this exploit.
Commemoration
A marble plate, sealed in the fence of the Cabieu cinema in Ouistreham, posed the September 29th 1929 by Henri Chéron, Minister for Finance and senator of the Apple-brandy of the time, commemorates this glorious exploit and a street of Caen recalls the memory of it, as well as an avenue with Ouistreham.The small house of Michel Cabieu is still located street of the Strike, in Ouistreham. A plate is also visible on the house in which he died in the n°5 of the street Carnot, in Ouistreham.
