Michael To carry , born in 1947, is a professor of Stratégie of company of the university Harvard, specialist also in the economy of the development

It is famous for its studies on the way in which one Entreprise can obtain a Competitive advantage (or favors competitive) while controlling better than its rivals the forces which structure its competing environment. This control of the forces of competition is illustrated by the deployment of a Chaîne of value which characterizes the economic model of the company. To carry also formalized on the theoretical level the concept of geographical Pôle of competence, so much so that the term its English name carries: Porter' S clusters . Michael Porter then took part in the foundation of the consultancy in strategy Monitor Group, of which it is still one of the vice-presidents.

One of the principal theoretical contributions To carry consists of a modeling of the competing environment of the company in the form of five factors, known as forces To carry, which influence the division of the Profit S within an industry:

  • the intensity of the competition enters the competitors;
  • capacity of negotiation of the customers;
  • the threat of entering potential on the market;
  • capacity of negotiation of the suppliers;
  • the threat of the substitute products;

Certain authors (in particular in continental Europe) add a sixth force: the influence of the public authority. To carry itself evokes in more recent writings another force: the complements (for example software publishers for the industry of the microcomputers: it is neither of the suppliers, nor of the customers, but many complements).
