Michael Scofield , played by Wentworth Miller, is the hero of the television serial Prison Station-wagon . When his/her older brother, Lincoln Burrows (Dominic Purcell), is condemned to died for a crime which it did not commit, Michael develops a plan very worked out to make it escape from prison.

Preamble

The history of Prison Station-wagon turns around two brothers and mainly around the plan of Michael Scofield to make them escape from Fox River and make them leave the the United States. As hero of the series, Michael Scofield is present in each episode. The role of Michael child, played by Dylan Iron ore, appeared in three episodes via very short flashbacks.

Born the September 8th 1978 after the abandonment from his/her father of the marital home, Michael Scofield took the name of young girl of its mother like family name. Several flashbacks gives us essential information on the bonds which exist between Michael and her brother Lincoln and the reasons for which Michael is determined with all to implement so that Lincoln escapes its execution. As he explains it to a priest, he will not hesitate with enfreindre the laws for that.

When Michael had eleven years and Lincoln fifteen years, their mother died of a Cancer. During several months, Michael was ballotté by the social services in families of reception, Lincoln then in center for young delinquents which cannot occupy itself some. One of the feeder fathers maltreated it by locking up it and by striking it. It is his/her father Aldo Burrows who will come to save it without him to reveal his true identity. After the loss of his/her two parents, Lincoln rocked in the delinquency, but by taking care that Michael does not follow the same way.

Michael being a particularly gifted pupil, it obtains excellent school results with the college Morton East High School. Then, it takes down well a license in Sciences with mention and a Maîtrise in Civil engineering with the Université of Loyola with Chicago. It successfully becomes Engineer in Civil engineering in the company Middleton , Maxwell and Schaum with Chicago.

Three years before Lincoln is imprisoned with Fox River, the relations between Michael and Lincoln are tended more and more because of their completely opposite lives. Wentworth Miller explains why before the prison, Michael was a man empty, careerist, ambitious . Michael sees in Lincoln only one irresponsible and it starts to be tired - ( to be the big brother of my big brother ). After the arrest of Lincoln for the murder of Terrence Steadman, Michael does not believe immediately in the innocence of Lincoln. Nevertheless, after having discovered that his/her brother had borrowed ninety thousand dollars to allow him to carry out his studies, Michael realizes that Lincoln is not at all the man whom he believed to know.

By reminding the way in which Lincoln had taken care on him when he was child and by becoming aware of the sacrifices which he made, Michael feels terribly guilty. These discoveries on his/her brother as on itself encourage it with all to implement to save it. According to the creator Paul Scheuring, this change was underlined by the play of the actor and the use of the camera angles. In front of impossibility of helping her brother while passing by the legal authorities and the final rejection of the calls of Lincoln, Michael takes the things in hand.

Coincidence, the company of Michael had been responsible for the restoration of the prison Fox River but it is the same penal establishment which shelters Lincoln until its execution. Michael recovers the plans of the building and during one year whole, méticuleusement a plan develops to save his/her brother. Before being imprisoned, Michael analyzed each detail like each person of the prison. Once inside, it must be able to create relations with other prisoners which it needs for its plan as with certain members for the personnel for the prison that it has need to handle.

During the four months which precedes its imprisonment, Michael gradually will be made tattoo a large fresco of Gothic inspiration recovering her chest, her arms and her back and representing the battle of the angels and the demons. These Tatouage S represents actually the plans of the prison like various other information essential with the execution of its plan:

• the drawing tattooed on its chest of a demon massacring a Ange contains the plans of the corridors and underground tunnels

• the right-hand man raises angels and its left arm of the demons, as well as other inscriptions and indices which he wanted to memorize (for example: chemical formula, phone number…)

Nicknames

So in the French version, Michael is called Mouth of angel , in original version, it has several nicknames and mainly in the first season.

• “Fish” (episodes 1x01 , 1x02 , 1x03 , 1x05 , 1x07 , 1x08 , 1x10 , 1x20 ,…), which means approximately blue or the new one . Sweeten recalls him besides in the episode a man out of the commun run which one cannot any more call it thus when new prisoners arrive at the prison.
• One also hears “Snow Flake” (literally, “Snowflake”, translated by “White-Snow” in the French version) in the episodes 1x01 ,…;
• And finally “Pretty” (“my pretty”) or “Beauty” (“beauty”) in the episodes 1x03 , 1x09 , 1x13 , 1x14 , 1x19 , 1x20 , 1x22 , 2x06 , 2x21 ,…

Season 1

In the first season, Michael Scofield is present in the majority of the scenes of each episode.

To be with Fox To rivet, Michael does not hesitate to direct a bank with face discovered and to plead guilty in front of the judge. He asks to be imprisoned with alleging Fox River that the establishment is close to at his place.

Once over there, it recruits a certain number of people to facilitate the escape: his/her companion of cell Fernando Sweetens to help it to dig, the godfather John Abruzzi to integrate it in the team of penitentiary industry (PI) and to provide him a plane and the old man Charles Westmoreland, who he thinks of being celebrates it robber D.B. Cooper, to help it to finance their lives of fugitive. Michael also simulates to be diabetic in order to have a daily access to the infirmary (the exit door of the escaped prisoners) and to allow him to establish a relation with the doctor Sara Tancredi, who precisely proves to be the girl of the Gouverneur of the Illinois, Frank Tancredi.

A toe of Michael is cut out by John Abruzzi, which wants to force it to reveal the place to him where hides the witness protected Otto Fibonacci. When Michael refuses obtempérer, he proposes an exchange: the plane against the address of Fibonacci. The date of the execution of Lincoln approaching dangerously, Michael and her team decide to escape but the replacement of a pipe in the handing-over puts a term at this attempt.

A few days later, at the time of one of its night excursions, it accidentally burns the back while trying not to be made locate by a guard. Refusing to acknowledge with the director the reason of this burn, Michael is placed in insulation. The sequence of these events ends up reaching Michael who seems to sink in a depression.

In an interview, Wentworth Miller confirms this assumption: ( When the replacement of the discharge pipe destroys their escape and ruins their plan has, it is a little as a grain of sand which would have slipped into the well oiled gears of Michael Scofield, which causes its nervous breakdown ). Transferred in the psychiatric unit, Michael finds her spirits (or ceases pretending its depression) and renews contact with immediately Tripped the to convince it to redraw the missing part to him.

Other prisoners that Michael had not envisaged will be added to the team: (T-Bag, C-Note, Tripped the, the Acrobat and Handle). Obstacles go thwarted the plan on several occasions forcing Michael to reformulate it. However, the reassuring and inoffensive attitude that voluntarily Michael posted all the same will bear its fruits.

It succeeds in creating a relationship of trust with the director Henry Pope and tying a bond privileged with the doctor Sara Tancredi. It uses them thereafter to save the life of his brother. After having asked Sara not to close with key the door of the infirmary and to have threatened in spite of him the director in her office, Michael escapes finally above the walls Fox River with her brother and other prisoners.

Season 2

In the second season, the history continues to follow Michael, her brother and other escaped prisoners while they try to escape the authorities which continue them without slackening. The first three episodes still show the level of complexity of the plan of Michael. Its preparation before its imprisonment with Fox River is particularly useful when Michael carries out her brother, Sucre, C-Note and Abruzzi towards a hiding-place with Oswego and provides them clothing of replacement.

Moreover, Michael prepared a bag containing of the money, a cellphone, prepaid cards of telephone, and false passports for Lincoln and him. But, an agent of FBI named Alexander Mahone realizes that Scofield is the brain of the operation, it is intrigued by the clever spirit of Michael. This new character becomes the Némésis of Michael. Thus, Mahone deciphers three of its tattooings and is practically about to catch it with the cemetery when he discovers the significance of. In the episode according to the plan of Michael and Lincoln to put in scene another escape (that of L.J) from the court of the County before its lawsuit for the double murder from LISA and Adrian Rix.

Their plan is thwarted after the Mahone agent decodes the message given to L.J. Moreover, Lincoln receives a ball which forces them to take refuge in the apartment of Nika Volek. After having recovered their car removed by the fourrière, Michael and Lincoln explode their car close to a road isolated (thanks to the explosives placed beforehand by Michael in their car) in order to pass for dead near the authorities.

Mahone continues to include/understand the plan of Michael and to detect it while this one leaves the Illinois to go in Utah in order to seek the five million Dollar S of Westmoreland. After having escaped with Brad Bellick and its assistant Roy Geary and left Nika (after it betrayed them) close to a road, Michael and Lincoln move towards Tooele in Utah to find the money of Westmoreland.

They are joined by Tweener, T-Bag, Sucre and C-Note. Michael and Lincoln separate for the first time from the series when Lincoln decides to recover L.J which will be released of prison. After a certain time, Michael, Sugar, T-Bag and C-Note deterrent finally money. Although Michael and Sucre projected to deceive their former fellows-prisoner, it is T-Bag which misleads everyone and leaves with the money. Michael saves the Sugar life when it falls into the river. This one returns the similar one to him when Michael finds himself in bad posture vis-a-vis Mexican smugglers. In spite of that, Mahone continuous to track Michael when it locates the place of appointment with Sara Tancredi with the New Mexico. Michael meets finally Sara, which is little laid out to escape from the Panama with him. They are stopped by the arrival of Mahone which continues them in the car to an unused factory. Michael manages to trap the agent of FBI by imprisoning it in a cage. After Sara refuses its offer, Michael decides to continue her plan.

But its actions (flight of the GPS, escape from T-Bag, etc…) torture more and more. Wentworth Miller explains: Michael is literally free, but émotionnellement and psychologically, he is still a prisoner Fox River. He is haunted by deaths, tortured by the idea that he could handle Doctor Sara Tancredi and finally he feels guilty to have helped of the types like T-Bag to pass the wall of this prison . He cracks and decides to take refuge in a church to confess itself, he proves that this man was his feeder father, who was killed by Aldo Burrows, his biological father. Michael finds Sucre, Lincoln like her father with, a coded place.

While they move towards the place where the supposed plane to bring them to the Panama will land, Aldo tries to be made forgive to have to give up its sons. However, Mahone again succeeds in decoding the message and manages to wound Aldo mortally. Before dying in the arms of Michael, he acknowledges with his sons that he always liked them and beseeches them to find Sara Tancredi. He thinks that it holds the proof of the innocence of Lincoln. The two brothers decide not to flee with Sucre with the Panama. They refuse to let the Trust leave itself there. Little time afterwards, they is captured by Mahone, which is about to kill them coldly when the patrol of the borders intervenes. The following day, Michael etLincoln manage to escape in a tunnel, like had envisaged it the agents Mahone and Kellerman. However, Kellerman draws on Mahone and proposes its assistance with the two brothers to be avenged for the President Caroline Reynolds, which ruined each one of their lives.

After being itself escaped, the latter go in the search of Terrence Steadman which is insulated in its residence kept permanently by federal agents. They manage to kidnap it and take refuge in a hotel room. Michael invites the television channel Chanel 11 to announce that it goes (actually is to prove that Steadman is always in life). But Terrence panics, it fears the life imprisonment to have masked its death. By selfishness, it commits suicide, leaving Lincoln and Michael in their despair. The police force and the press arrive close to their hotel room.

After having failed in their attempt to use Steadman, Michael, Lincoln and Kellerman escape the police force by taking as an hostage a cameraman and stealing the car from a journalist from television. They oblige the cameraman to record a video in which Lincoln proclaims its innocence and reveals the existence of the Trust, whereas Michael denounces the murders of the Mahone agent and fact of the excuses with Sara by explaining that it is only one innocent victim. This video is delivered to the media, however Kellerman and Michael intentionally carried it out to give the impression to the agents of the FBI that they had some after the president Reynolds, whereas actually they wanted to deliver a message with Sara. Michael successfully receives a phone call of Sara with the hospital St Thomas with Akron in Ohio. He promises to him that all can be arranged if it gives him the key which belonged to his/her father and who can probably denounce the conspiracy.

Personality

Michael Scofield suffers from two psychiatric affections . The first is the deficit of latent Inhibition ( Low-Latent Inhibition ). By looking at an object, instead of sticking to the first visual aspect, Michael analyzes all, takes into account each detail (of what it is made up etc…). Compound with a high Q.I, that made of him a creative genius. In addition, in the second season.

Interpretation

In the majority of its scenes of the first season, Wentworth Miller voluntarily uses a limited range of expressions of the face. That reinforces the mysterious side of the character, his unshakeable determination and its calm inébranlable. This choice generated criticisms at the same time positive and negative. Thus for its play in the first season, Wentworth Miller was named with the Golden Globes. The Washington Post judged that the performance of Miller was: ( most oppressive ) and how ( the actor apparently could think that it always appears cool while being scanning the surroundings… ). Contrary, The NewYork Times appreciated that Miller does not reveal too her emotions: ( He projects an imperturbable determination which disconcerts its fellows-prisoner…. ).

By evoking her character, Miller explains: ( I think that part of my challenge was to create, with a little chance, an undeniable character. But at the same time, there were many things which I could not show, because by côtoyant Abruzzi, T-Bag or Bellick, I could not allow me to be vulnerable. I could not allow me to outline a smile. ). And: I chose to make an enigmatic hero of them. . He also says: My perception of the character literally changed since the commencement of the series. When I read the scenario for the first time, I thought: " Ok, it is the history of an ordinary type which is found in circumstances extraordinaires." But I quickly understood that Michael was in fact an extraordinary man in extraordinary circumstances! He has as many problems and shares of shade which the big brother that he came to save. And if it did not have any, it would be never able to try but it makes, because it is something that nobody of judicious would make . Thus, the first time where Michael lets burst her anger in front of the others, it is in the last episode of the first season. It is now free and outside the prison.

By preparing her plan of escape, Michael had gotten information about Doctor Sara Tancredi. Thus as of their first meeting, he pretends to be unaware of that it is the girl of the Tancredi governor whereas he had articles of newspapers on it.
