Michael Schumacher (born the January 3rd 1969 with Hürth-Hermülheim, close to Cologne, Germany -), affectionately called “ Schumi ” by its many fans or the “ red baron ” by the journalists, in reference to the ace of German aviation during the First World War Manfred von Richthofen, is a German pilot of automobile Sport, seven times world champion of Formule 1. He currently lives with Gland in Suisse.

One can legitimately consider that it appears, at the sides of Juan Manuel Fangio, Jim Clark, Ayrton Senna, Alain Prost or Jackie Stewart, among the very restricted circle of the pilots of legend of the Formule 1. It would be absurd to want to appoint among these some pilots “the best pilot of Formula 1 of all times”, because they did not run at the same times and the circumstances of their careers are completely different. What can be put at the credit of Michael Schumacher, it is that he did not hesitate, after its first two world titles, whereas he was already at the top of his art, with all to call in question while engaging in a stable Ferrari, certainly prestigious, but which had not gained anything any more since nearly twenty years. Under the enlightened direction of Jean Todt, with the complicity of those who were already its engineers at Benetton - Ross Brawn and Rory Byrne - he overcame all the difficulties to return to the Italian stable its gloss of antan.

Michael Schumacher began her career in Formule 1 in 1991, while replacing with the foot raised in the very young stable Jordan, Bertrand Gachot, imprisoned in Great Britain following the aggression of a taxi driver per teargas with London little before the Grand Prix of Belgium to Spa-Francorchamps. As of the following Grand Prix, located by Flavio Briatore, it controls for the stable Benetton, with which it will make its training and will conquer its first two titles of world champion.

Of 1996 with 2006, it controlled for the prestigious Italian stable Ferrari, which it contributed to start again after one long period of failure, signing at the wheel of F1 of Maranello 72 of its 91 victories, bringing five world titles to him pilot and contributing directly to obtaining six titles manufacturers.

From 1997, it had like adversary in track his/her young brother Ralf, six years its junior, also pilot by Formula 1. The two brothers never ran within the same stable.

The September 10th 2006, at the conclusion of the Grand Prix of Italy, during which it gained the 90e victory of its career, Michael Schumacher, very moved, announced that it would take its retirement at the conclusion of the season 2006.

It disputed its last season in 2006 at Ferrari at the sides of the young Brazilian pilot Felipe Massa, and fought to obtain an eighth world title until the last test with the Brésil, where for its last race the October 22nd 2006, it offered a époustouflant spectacle, going up after a puncture of the last place with 4th.

After sixteen seasons and an exceptional prize list, Michael Schumacher was thus withdrawn from the circuits in full possession of its means. It left its wheel to the Finnish Kimi Räikkönen, which left McLaren to replace the septuple German world champion starting from 2007 within the Scuderia Ferrari. However, the German pilot will not move away too much from the Formule 1, since it will preserve functions within the Italian stable while becoming the assistant of Jean Todt, recently promoted managing director of Ferrari.

To date, Michael Schumacher holds the majority of the records of Formula 1 except for the records of precocity and of the record of many disputed Grands Prix.

Biography

The rise towards F1

His/her father managing a track of karting to Kerpen, place of residence of the Schumacher family, Michael Schumacher is initiated as of his more young age with the mechanical sports. He begins the competition as of 1984, at the fifteen years age. Very quickly, successes arrive: he becomes champion of Europe of Karting in 1987, then passes in Formule Ford and gains the national title in 1988. The following year, it passes in Formule 3. In 1990, for its second year, it gains the title of champion of Germany and also is essential at the end of the season in the prestigious Grand Prix of Macao F3 after having caused a fixing with the Finn Mika Häkkinen. This same year 1990, Michael is incorporated in the program Mercedes Junior TEAM in the championship of the world of the sport scars. With his/her comrades of promotion who are Heinz-Harald Frentzen, Karl Wendlinger and Fritz Kreutzpointer, it côtoie at Sauber - Mercedes of the pilots of experiment such as Jean-Louis Schlesser, Mauro Baldi and Jochen Mass. Always in 1991, it takes part in the 24 hours of Mans for only and single time of its career to date. It will be pointed out there by occupying a time the second place with the general and while setting out again with the best turn in race. It will finish in the fifth place (with Karl Wendlinger and Fritz Kreutzpointer)…

Promising beginnings in F1 (1991-1993)

In 1991, Mercedes seeks to place its protected young people Formulates 1 of them, and in Michael Schumacher priority. An opportunity arises a few days before the GP of Belgium when the Franco-Belgian pilot Bertrand Gachot of the stable Jordan is retained by British justice following a dispute with a London taxi driver. As of its making of contact with Jordan, Schumacher impresses its engineers, one even required of him to go " less vite". Impression confirmed during the tests of the GP of Belgium disputed on the selective layout of Spa-Francorchamps, that Schumacher discovers. Qualified on the seventh place of the grid (in front of its tested team-member Andrea de Cesaris), Schumacher however does not on the occasion to be highlighted in race, its clutch returning the heart at the end of a few hectometers. But, at the time, much of people said that it could have gained at its first Grand Prix after having seen its team-member fighting for the victory with Ayrton Senna. In the days which follow, Schumacher défraie the chronicle while being in the center of a legal arm wrestling between the Jordan teams and Benetton for its engagement. As of the GP following to Italy, Schumacher is found under the colors of Benetton-Ford, where it confirms the potential foreseen at the time of its first GP. After Cesaris, it is this time triple world champion Nelson Piquet, it true is démotivé and close to the retirement, which makes the expenses of the Schumacher tornado.

As of its first complete season Formulates 1 in 1992 of them, Schumacher is affirmed like one of the sure values of the group. Third of the championship of the world (behind the untouchable pilots Williams - Renault Nigel Mansell and Ricardo Patrese, but in front of Ayrton Senna), it gains its first victory in F1 at the time of the GP of Belgium, just a year after its beginnings. Confirmation in 1993, with a second victory in GP (in Portugal) and the fourth place with the championship.

First titles with Benetton (1994-1995)

Beginning 1994, in regard to its impressive services during the winter tests, Schumacher is presented like the principal outsider of Ayrton Senna to the championship. The duel awaited so much between the two best pilots of the world however will turn short, since after the two first sleeves of the year gained by Schumacher (thanks to better a management of the stops to the stand in Brazil, and the fixing between Hakkinen and Senna in Japan), Senna finds death whereas it led the race to Imola, place of the third test of the season. Vis-a-vis a sparse opposition, Schumacher then has the free field to slip by towards its first world crown. It is without counting on the troubles of Schumacher and Benetton with the sporting capacity. In Silverstone, Schumacher is displaced (it had finished 2nd) not to have obtempéré with a consecutive penalty with an illegal operation (going beyond) at the time of the turn of formation. That will be worth to him a suspension of 2 Large-Prices for non-observance of the black flag. Then, in Belgium, it is disqualified (it had finished 1st), the police chiefs having noted an excessive wear of the plank of wood located under the car.

These various misadventures make it possible unexpected the Damon Hill, which endorses with courage the role of pilot Williams number 1 since the disappearance of Senna, to return in the fight for the title. Schumacher must thus await the ultimate race of the year in Australia to take down the world title, titrates which will be exploited a fixing with Damon Hill. This last was about to exceed it and to take the world title to him since the German had just left to the fault and to run up against a concrete low wall. But in spite of this final chaotic, Schumacher is with 8 successes (Brazil, the Pacific, St-Sailor, Monaco, Canada, France, Hungary and Europe) of 14 races, the undeniable pilot of the year.

In 1995, with its Benetton from now on equipped with the engine V10 Renault, Schumacher republishes its domination on Formula 1, with nine successes (Brazil, Spain, Monaco, France, Germany, Belgium, Europe, the Pacific and Japan) and a second world title, in spite of a quite bad car.

A bet dared at Ferrari (1996-1999)

The year 1996 is the year of the change. It gives up the stable Benetton with which it has just conquered two world titles, and arrives with its N°1 in mythical the Scuderia Ferrari, a team in full rebuilding under the impulse of the French Jean Todt. Dared bet, which will spend some time before proving gaining. In spite of a not very effective car, he manages to reach the third place of the championship of the pilots, by gaining three GP (a first for Ferrari since the season 1990). He gains thus in Spain under a beating rain, at the end of a domination pointing out the demonstrations of the largest pilots of the history, but also in Belgium and especially in Italy, in front of thousands of tifosi is delirious about it. The latter found their new idol, and start to foresee better days for Scuderia after the black years than it has just crossed.

In 1997, while progress of Ferrari is confirmed, Schumacher takes down five victories (Monaco, Canada, France, Belgium and Japan) and approaches the ultimate race of the season with a point in advance on the Canadian Jacques Villeneuve. Surprised by an attack of the Québécois, Schumacher gives a blow of steering wheel of its rival and causes a fixing. Mow, this gesture has of another effect only to cause its own abandonment, as well as an immense polemic on the behavior anti-sportsman of the German pilot. Villeneuve is crowned and Schumacher is displaced championship, for anti-sporting control. He will also see himself imposing by the TRUSTED to take part in actions for the road safety. Schumacher will however preserve all its points and its victories acquired at the time of this season 1997.

In 1998, always on Ferrari, it gains six Grands Prix (Argentina, Canada, France, the United Kingdom, Hungary and Italy) but is again beaten with the championship in the ultimate race of the season, this time by Mika Häkkinen, on McLaren - Mercedes. In 1999, the Hakkinen-Schumacher duel continues, but is stopped by the wound of Schumacher, victim of a fracture of the leg with the GP of Great Britain following a violent exit due to a mechanical rupture in the turn of Stowe. It returns at the end of the season to test, without success, to save the pilot title with its fellow-member Eddie Irvine. In spite of an astonishing show of force in Malaysia where it offers the victory to Irvine, it is impotent in Japan to counter Hakkinen. With two victories in the season (St-Sailor and Monaco), it finishes 5th pilot classification, and contributes to the championship manufacturer of Scuderia Ferrari (the first since 1983).

Dedication: a reign without division (2000-2004)

The year 2000 is that of the dedication for the tandem Schumacher-Ferrari. After an imperial beginning of the season supported by the problems of reliability met by McLaren (it gains the first 3 GP in Australia, Brésil, St-Sailor, then is essential in Europe and on Canada) and in spite of a bad patch during the summer (3 consecutive abandonments in particular) which makes it possible Hakkinen to remake most of its delay, and to even take the advantage with the championship of the world after the Grand Prix of Hungary, it is titrated after an end of dominating season since it gains the 4 last Grand Prix of the season (Italy, the United States, Japan, Malaysia). Michael Schumacher becomes the first pilot since Jody Scheckter in 1979 with being titrated on Ferrari. This success is the first of long series for the German.

In 2001, it takes down its fourth title after having gained 9 GP (Australia, Malaysia, Spain, Monaco, Europe, France, Hungary, Belgium and Japan). The scenario repeats in 2002 with 11 victories, and a title acquired as of the GP of France disputed in July, thanks to a formidable car. Never in the history a pilot had not been crowned also early in the season. This quasi-perfect season is however sullied by the GP with Austria, during which Barichello, dominator during all the weekend, is obliged to yield the head of the race to its fellow-member with some encablures of the arrival.

In 2003, vis-a-vis an opposition often better armed (in the middle of the summer, the Michelin of its adversaries dominate the Bridgestone of Ferrari), it gains only 6 races, and must await the last GP of the season to take down its sixth title, the Finn Kimi Räikkönen having remained threatening until the end. The title was played GP of the USA, where Schumi gained a superb victory, under the rain, left the 7° place on the grid. This title will have a sad taste for Michael who, at the time of the Grand Prix of San Marino, lost her Elisabeth mother, died of a hemorrhage. This day, it gained a great victory for his mother, her Ralf brother finishing fourth.

But in 2004, Schumacher and Scuderia take again their domination on F1, for one season of all the records. Schumacher is essential on 13 recoveries and is crowned world champion for the seventh time.

At the end of 2004, it off takes part in the “Race Champions” where it is inclined finally against Heikki Kovalainen but gains its duel so much awaited vis-a-vis Sebastien Loeb.

One year difficult (2005) before the return to competitiveness (2006)

The year 2005 proves to be one year quite difficult for Schumacher and the Scuderia Ferrari: at the wheel of a disappointing car, equipped which more is tires Bridgestone well not very powerful, it gains one Grand Prix, that of the the United States to Indianapolis, deserted by the pilots equipped with tires Michelin (their tires not allowing to contribute under security conditions sufficient). It however finishes the season in unhoped-for a third place with the championship controls, intelligently benefitting from the troubles from Montoya and Fisichella at the time of the last races.

In 2006, its car is more powerful, and saturdays April 22nd 2006, by carrying out the best time of the tests qualifiers at the time of the Grand Prix of San Marino, Michael Schumacher allocates the 66e pole position of its career and thus exceeds the record - mythical and appearing, at the time inacessible - number of pole positions (65) held until there by Brazilian the Ayrton Senna, which it had equalized at the time of the Grand Prix of Bahrain for the opening of the season. It will have needed 238 GP against only 161 with the Brazilian pilot to carry out this performance. This season, the fight for the title is keen with the young Spanish world champion Fernando Alonso. The September 10th 2006, it announces its retirement for the end of the season, after having gained the Grand Prix of Italy to Monza.

Although it took the head of the championship at the conclusion of the Grand Prix of China, whereas there remained only two races to be disputed, its abandonment at the time of the Grand Prix of Japan because of the explosion of its engine and a puncture at the beginning of the test at the time of the Grand Prix of Brazil will have been right of its ambitions. It withdraws on one 4th final place, after having once again been the proof of its immense talent during an insane increase since the 19th place.

Its future

The October 29th 2006, Ferrari revealed that Michael Schumacher will in the future occupy the functions of assistant of Jean Todt with the direction of sporting management, this last having in addition been appointed managing director of the mark Ferrari. The new functions of the German pilot were not to lead it to take again the wheel of a single-seater. However, November 13rd and 14th 2007, Scuderia Ferrari called upon him to test F2007 for its development vis-a-vis the new payment 2008 prohibiting the assistances with piloting. Against any waiting, it succeeds in establishing the best stopwatch on the circuit of Montmelo (Spain) at the time of these two days. (Source: )

Polemics and incidents having enamelled the career of Michael Schumacher

Grand Prix of Macao de Formule 3 1990

Winner of the Championship of Germany de Formule 3, Schumacher is one of the favorites of the test (kind of World cup of the discipline), as well as the Finn Mika Hakkinen, winner as for him of the British championship of Formula 3.
the first sleeve of the race is dominated by Mika Hakkinen, while Schumacher must be satisfied with the second place, more than 3 seconds behind. In the second sleeve, Schumacher takes the advantage on its Finnish rival with the first braking, but this last, knowing that the final victory is played by addition of times of the two handles, can be satisfied to finish on the heels of the German to gain the Grand Prix. Benefitting from an error of the German, Hakkinen undertakes all the same to exceed it for the arrival. The operation shows a fixing between the two men, and causes the abandonment of Hakkinen, the final victory returning with Schumacher. The images of the accident make it possible with difficulty to forge a final opinion on the responsibility for Schumacher.

Championship of the world of Formula 1 1994

Although presented as of the winter tests like a regular candidate to the victory, Schumacher (Benetton-Ford) creates the feeling with GP of Brazil, first sleeve of the season, by dominating Ayrton Senna, however announced like the big favorite of the championship. The high level of competitiveness of the Benetton - Ford causes suspicion quickly, and the stable italo-British is suspected of using a antipatinage, device electronic of assistance to the piloting prohibited since the end of the former season. The TRUSTED will manage to prove the presence of such a device on the Benetton B194, but not its use at the time of the Grand Prix, a nuance who will prevent it from taking sanctions.

Grand Prix of Great Britain 1994

At the time of the turn of formation, Michael Schumacher exceeds temporarily Damon Hill, placed in front of him on the starting grid. The operation is prohibited by the payment which stipulates that the pilots must preserve during the turn of formation the positions of the starting grid, but the practice showed that the police chiefs of track never sanction this minor infringement, without consequence on the course of the test. It is thus with a certain surprise which one learns that Schumacher is sanctioned of a " stop and go" from 5 seconds. Schumacher, on order of its team, refuses to purge her penalty, which is worth to him to receive a black flag synonymous with disqualification. Again, the German pilot refuses obtempérer. Following long discussions between the team and the direction of race, Schumacher purges finally its initial penalty and finishes the race in second position. But little time afterwards, TRUSTED it pronounces its disqualification, together with a firm suspension of two races (which it will purge in September at the time of the GP of Italy and Portugal).
If the refusal of obtempérer to a black flag is a very serious fault which can justify the heaviness of the sanction (let us note however that in 1989, Nigel Mansell had bailed out only of only one race of suspension for such a fault with the GP of Portugal), that does not have to make forget that this fault was the ultimate degree of an arm wrestling started following the benign infringement of Schumacher at the time of the turn of formation, which had as for it is the not easily comprehensible sanction object. Two theories clash to explain the severity of the police chiefs. For some, it acted, by blocking the domination of Schumacher, artificially to start again the interest of the championship, leaded by the death of Senna. For others, this severity of TRUSTED is rather to connect to the business antipatinage explained higher: having acquired the certainty of a cheating of Benetton without managing to show it, TRUSTED it would have sought the other pretexts, even most ridiculous, to sanction the stable italo-British.

Grand Prix of Belgium 1994

Winner of the race, Schumacher is disqualified by the technical police chiefs, who consider excessive the wear of the wood shoe placed under Benetton of the German pilot, signs of a ground clearance nonlawful. The Benetton stable will try to justify this wear by a slew-round of the German pilot who had involved a passage out of spinning top on a vibrator. But wear will be considered to be too regular to be caused by this only incident.

Grand Prix of Australia 1994

Its second half of season having been strongly blocked by its démélés with the sporting capacity (two disqualifications and two races of suspension), Schumacher approaches the ultimate handle of the championship with only one point in advance on Damon Hill. That means that of the two pilots who will finish the race in front of the other will be crowned world champion. Author of an excellent departure, Schumacher takes from the start the command of the operations. After having undergone a strong pressure of Hill in the first part of the test Schumacher manages to widen the gap, so that in the most sinuous portions of the layout, Hill gradually loses the visual contact with her adversary. It is at this moment of the race that Schumacher makes an error in a turn on the left, and runs up against a cement wall with its nose gear right. Strongly slowed down by the shock, and with a probably damaged suspension (but one will never know at which point), Schumacher sees Hill returning immediately on him, and trying to overflow it by making him the interior in the following turn. Schumacher is folded back then abruptly on its adversary, causing the fixing and the abandonment of the two pilots, synonymous with world title for the German.
Following this accident whose sporting consequences were very large (since it decided attribution of the world title), it however did not have there a true polemic. The accident was immediately classified without continuation by the direction of race, and the adversaries of Schumacher (Hill and members of Williams) remained relatively discrete in the defeat.

Grand Prix of Belgium 1995

The fight for the victory opposes Michael Schumacher to Damon Hill. On a partially wet track, and in spite of tires for dry track, the German manages to hold head with his adversary, however faster thanks to better adapted gums. But the resistance of Schumacher which changes several times of line (some will speak about zigzag), is regarded by certain observers as energy beyond the rules of sportivity.

Grand Prix of Europe 1997

Like three years earlier, Schumacher abordre the ultimate handle of the championship with only one point in advance on its adversary, in fact the Canadian Jacques Villeneuve (Williams). Better party than its rival, the German dominates the beginning of race before losing ground gradually, at the point to be made catch up with in the last part of the test. Thanks to a late braking, Villeneuve carries an attack on Schumacher, which counterpart while folding back itself on Williams. The contact between the two cars does not make this time only one victim, Schumacher itself, which completes its race in a gravel vat, while Villeneuve manages to rejoin the arrival and to conquer the world title.

Contrairement to what had arrived after GP of Australia 1994, and while at the same time the litigious operation does not have this time not profited at its author, the media repercussion is colossal. TRUSTED decides to take a measure symbolically very strong by downgrading Schumacher of the championship, implying that she would not have hesitated to withdraw with the German her world title over green carpet Schumacher preserves however at her prize list all successes, points and pole-positions acquired during the year.

Grand Prix of Canada 1998

While leaving the stands, Schumacher is replaced immediately on the good trajectory, and dispatches out-track its compatriot Heinz-Harald Frentzen, who déboulait at full speed. Penalized by the police chiefs of a " stop and go" from 10 seconds (what will not prevent it from gaining the race), Schumacher will explain not to have seen Frentzen, which was in a dead angle at the time when it arose from the stands.

Grand Prix of Great Britain 1998

At the time of a test disputed under terrible weather conditions, Michael Schumacher makes himself guilty of a going beyond under mode of safety-because. The sanction falls in end of the road, whereas Schumacher is at the head of the test, but greatest confusion reigns as for the methods of execution of the penalty (a " stop and go" from 10 seconds or addition a 10 seconds to final time?), so much so that it will purge its penalty… after having passed the finishing line in the stands!

Grand Prix of Belgium 1998

Largely at the head of the race, disputed under a beating rain, Schumacher is on the point of taking a turn with David Coulthard, but violently runs up against it by the back. Of return to the stands on 3 wheels to give up, Schumacher, furious, joined Coulthard in its garage, and one needs the intervention of mechanics to prevent that blows are exchanged. As regards the accident in itself, it is difficult to be made an opinion without the telemetric data which permetteraient to know if Schumacher sinned by precipitation or bad evaluation of the distances, or if it is on the contrary Coulthard (then team-member at McLaren of Mika Hakkinen, the rival of Schumacher to the championship) which raised the foot in a ill-considered way.

Championship of the world of Formula 1 2000

During the season 2000, part of the press and adversaries of Schumacher (the first of which one finds David Coulthard) stigmatize its piloting judged anti-sportsman. Such reproaches with regard to Schumacher are recurring, but culminate in 2000 in a true media campaign. Schumacher is especially shown finger for its departures, during which some reproach him for changing line more once (in other words, to zigzag) whereas only one change of line is authorized by the sporting code. The sporting authorities will never intervene in the polemic (implicitly giving reason to Schumacher) which will lose itself in intensity, but without never completely dying out.

Grand Prix of Austria 2002

With a few meters of the finishing line, Rubens Barrichello, leader of the test since the departure, slows down to offer the victory to its fellow-member Michael Schumacher, best representing Ferrari in the fight for the world title. Ceremony of the podium (during which Schumacher lets Barrichello go up on more the high step, meaning to him that he is the moral winner) is held under broadsides of whistles and insults. The polemic will make rage during several weeks in the specialized media. The critics were primarily addressed to Jean Todt, the director of the Scuderia Ferrari, and thus at the origin of the order enjoignant with Barrichello to let gain Schumacher. But it was also reproached Schumacher for not having had the authority to pass in addition to this instruction (of a debatable mathematical interest taking into account its already broad advance with the championship at this stage of the year) and not to have left the victory to its fellow-member more deserving.

Grand Prix of Monaco 2006

Author of the best provisional time of the qualifications, Michael Schumacher immobilizes himself at the end of his ultimate turn of qualification, in the slow turn of Rascasse. Immobilized on the track, Schumacher causes the deployment of the yellow flags, preventing in fact its main adversaries to improve their times and thus to charm the pole-position to him. Judging that the operation of the German pilot is voluntary and is not the consequence of a fault of piloting, the police chiefs decide to disqualify it, obliging it to take the following day the departure of the race starting from the bottom of grid.

Assessment of an exceptional career

It is always difficult to compare pilots who did not run at the same time, and it would be vain to say that such or such is the best pilot one of all times. At most can one try to make some quantified comparisons.
