Michael Marks

Michael Marks , (June 1859 - December 31st 1907), was one of the two cofounders of the chain of resale Marks & Spencer.

Marks, which was born with Slonim, Poland, emigrated in England when it was young.

Marks made the decision to rent a space for the sale with Leeds, the place was used as store during 6 days of the week. One of its famous advertisements of sale was that its articles did not cost more Penny. Near the store, one could read these words " Don' T Ask the Price, It' S.A. Penny" --> ( do not ask the price, it is a penny )

In 1894, Marks decided which if he wanted to extend his company, he was to find a business partner. It initially approached Isaac Dewhurst which scorned the offer by suggesting its cash clerk in the place, Tom Spencer, who would be interested. Spencer thought that with £300, that was enough to open a department store.

The May 5th 1897, Marks was naturalized prone Britannique.
