Biography
His/her father is the philosopher Emmanuel Levinas. After studies with the Conservatory of Paris (Yvonne Loriod, Olivier Messiaen) where it obtains many first prices, Michael Levinas carries out training courses with GRM, follows courses to Darmstadt (Xenakis, Stockhausen, Ligeti) and, in 1974, becomes cofounder then responsible for the Ensemble the Route. Pianist international concert performer, it teaches the analysis with the Academy of Paris since 1992.
As of the first works, in margin of the serialism, Michael Levinas develops a singular style of an extraordinary expressive power. Shock and dramatic, is two key words of the work of the type-setter. Shock, because it leads us to marvellous and the fantastic one, dramatic, because integral part of the universe levinassien: theatricalness. On the basis of sounds “impure”, “dirty”, it considers space (true “setting in scene of the sound”) and the recourse to technology (bands, devices electroacoustics) like revealing of the instrumental world. With the beginning of the year eighty ten, he works actively on the transients of attack and the hybridization of the sounds between them, thus continuing his research on the renewal of the theatrical dimension of the instrument.
