Michael Joseph Savage
Michael Joseph Savage (March 23rd 1872 - March 27th 1940) was a politician New Zealand which reached the function of Prime Minister.
Savage was born in Australia and parallel to began a political activity its work with Victoria. He emigrated in New Zealand in 1907. He carried on various activities before being implied in the trade union movement. Savage was opposed, at the beginning, with the workers party, not finding it socialist enough. In the place, he became president of the New Zealand Federation off Ploughing (Federation of the workers of New Zealand) known as Red Feds .
To the legislative elections of 1911, Savage was presented without success like socialist candidate for the district of the downtown area of Auckland. During the First World War, it was opposed to the Conscription, asserting that the conscription of the goods should precede that by the men. After the war, Savage was elected at the Parliament as a candidate of the New Zealand Workers party. It was one of the eight appointed members of the Labor elected and became the chief of the party after the death of Harry Holland. It took part in alliance Labor/Ratana.
During the Great Depression, Savage travelled in all the country and became an emblematic figure. Excel speaker, Savage became the politician more for country and it led the Labor to the victory with the elections of 1935. The first worker government proved to be popular and gained easily the elections of 1938 with a majority in increase. Savage suffered from a Cancer at that time, but it deferred the treatment of research of it to take part in the electoral campaign. It was to die of this cancer in 1940.
Single person during all his life, Savage brought a quasi religious enthusiasm to his political action. This and its death during an religious office gave to him an indication of icon within the Left. Architect of the Welfare state, his portrait would decorate many houses of sympathizers of the Labor . While the young generations are not very conscious of what it was, it is always révéré by a quantity of older New Zealanders.
Savage is buried with Bastion Not, on the sea front of Auckland, in Savage Memorial, a Mausolée located in top of a cliff, surmounted by a large arrow, in front of a vast garden of the memory and a reflection basin.
