Michael J. McGivney

The abbot Michael J. McGivney was born on August 12th 1852 with Waterbury (Connecticut) and died on August 14th 1890 with New Haven (Connecticut). Since 1868, McGivney starts its studies in priesthood with the Séminaire of Saint-Hyacinthe (Quebec) for then going back to the United States to finish them.

In 1873, the McGivney father enters to the Seminar St Mary' S to Baltimore, in Maryland. It however had to leave the seminar and to turn over to the house to deal with his brothers and sisters following the death of her father. It turns over finally to the seminar and is ordered priest on December 22nd, 1877 by the archbishop James Gibbons with the national basilica of the Assumption of the Happy Virgin Mary. The McGivney abbot begins his ministry as vicar with Christmas 1877 and celebrates his first mass in the church of co. Mary, New Haven (Connecticut).

The February 2nd 1882, whereas he was Pasteur assistant to write it Saint Mary' S with New Haven Connecticut, McGivney founded the organization of the Chevaliers of Colomb with an small group of its parishioners. McGivney died of Tuberculose in 1890 whereas it had only thirty-eight years.

The Chevaliers of Colomb now have 1.7 million members and thirty thousand councils. During the year 2004-2005, 134 million dollars and 68 million work hours were given in charity by the order. A biography by Douglas Brinkley and Julie Mr. Fenster of the McGivney father was published under the English name of Father Michael McGivney and American Catholicism by William Morrow and Company in 2006.

In its honor, York Catholic District School Board, in Ontario, founded a named school Father Michael McGivney Catholic Academy in 1989. It is in the town of Markham and currently trains 1.400 students. The Catholic University off America is at present spirit to renovate and will re-elect one of its buildings McGivney Hall.

A lawsuit in beatification was open in 1997.
