Michael Heizer is an contemporary artist specialized in the sculptures with large scales and the Land art.

Heizer was born with Berkeley, California in 1944; it began its career by producing conventional paintings and sculptures and of small size. Towards end of the year 60, Heizer left New York for the deserts of California and Nevada, where it started to produce on broad scale of work which could not be laid out in a museum, except perhaps in photography. This led to the production of the (in) , a Heizer ditch of 1500 feet cutting the side of a mésa in the desert of Nevada.

Since then, Heizer continued its exploration of the Earthworks , and it directed its efforts mainly on City , an enormous complex in the desert of the Comté of Lincoln (Nevada). It also produced a certain number of abstract paintings. Its sculptures with large scales, often inspired by the shapes of the Indians of America, can be found in the museums and public spaces throughout the world.

Since end of the year 90, the work of Heizer concentrated mainly on City , and today it continues this work, constant by the Dia Art Foundation with the assistance of a subsidy of the Lannan Foundation. City is not yet available to the public.
