Michael Haydn
Michael Haydn is an Austrian type-setter, born on September 14th 1737 with Rohrau (Austria) and deceased on August 10th 1806 with Salzburg. He is the younger brother of Joseph Haydn.
Biography
He receives his musical education in the control of the Cathédrale Saint-Etienne of Vienna, directed by Georg von Reutter. He also studies the Violon and the Orgue. He supplements then his education with the seminar Jésuite. After having occupied various uses of Choirmaster, it ends up being appointed Master in concert and Compositeur at the court of the prince archbishop of Salzburg, in 1763. Like his/her Joseph brother, it with the regard of Mozart which studied its compositions much. In 1777, it becomes Organiste of the cathedral of Salzburg and has in particular as pupils Carl Maria von Weber and Anton Diabelli.
Works
Its works comprises more than eight hundred compositions, primarily religious. In this total let us distinguish the 150 instrumental compositions, including 41 symphonies. It was a timid and reserved man who fled the praises of the public, which explains partly why it could fall into the lapse of memory. However, its contemporaries speak about him like artist who, particularly at the level of the crowned Musique, is located at the very first row.
One will raise in particular his superb and solemn Requiem of 1771 played in Salzburg while among the public Mozart father and wire were. It is indubitable as the Requiem of Mozart, composed in 1791, is inspired by its orchestral texture, its harmonies, its architectural balances, as well of the Requiem of Michael Haydn created twenty years earlier than of that of Antonio Rosetti (gone back to 1776).
