Michael Furter († 1516 or 1517 with Basle), known as sometimes in French Michel Furter , is a Imprimeur, Relieur and accountant of German language of second half of the 15th century, bench in Basle, whose editions are very required by the Bibliophile S.

Biographical summary

Originating in Augsburg, it is attested for the first time at Basle on January 15th 1483, whereas it acquires of a house. It joint quickly, on September 25th 1486, the Guild of the Safran ( Safranzunft ) - of which it becomes responsible ( Stubenmeister ) in 1493 - then the Guild of the Key ( Schlüsselzunft ) in 1495. It acquires the right of middle-class the March 1488. Although he unites with his activity of bookseller those of bookbinder and accountant, its financial position is not flourishing. After its death, which has occurred between on November 10th, 1516 and on May 2nd, 1517, its heirs give up his succession, which is declared in bankruptcy.

Works

Oldest attested pullings resulting from its printing works are gone back to 1489. Its fame is due especially to the ornamentation of its books and its illustrated works. Among most famous, one can quote the chronicle of Petermann Etterlin, just as the translation in German ( Der Ritter vom Turm ) by Marquard vom Stein of the Livre for the lesson of his daughters of the knight of the Tower Landry, printed by Furter in 1493, and whose certain illustrations were allotted to Albrecht Dürer.
