Biography

In 1987, he becomes the youngest player to gain a match at the time of US Open.

In 1989, it makes an extraordinary course at the time of the Roland-Garros. At the time of the eighth of finale, it eliminates Ivan Lendl, number one world, at the time of a match epic which remains in all the memories, where Michael fights against her cramps with the energy of despair and gains the match after having made psychologically crack Lendl with in particular its famous service surprised with the spoon. It gains the final against Stefan Edberg (6-1, 3-6, 4-6, 6-4, 6-2) then becoming the youngest winner of the Parisian tournament, at the 17 years and three months age. The finale day before Yannick Noah said: “Chang is a crab-louse, when you have it with the bottom during a match, not simple of you to disencumber some. ”

The following year, it belongs to the victorious team of the Coupe Davis.

After-1989 is difficult for the Chang young person. Gagner Roland-Garros so young is not so easy to manage. He has against him his inexperience, the pressure of the public and the media, and his completely atypical physique. Indeed at that time, the average cuts weight of signal 10 of the ATP is of 1,85 m for 76 kilos. Michael, with her small squat gauge seems not to be in her place. To be able to counter this apparent physical disadvantage, the Chang clan begins an intensive drive to transform the leg movement of Michael and to allow him to obtain a play “more founded on control on the power”. He becomes one of the models of the genre.

As of 1992, after 2 years of baited work, it becomes again credible on the court and says then: “I a little stronger, am tested a little more, a little older and more intelligent. I finally left adolescence. ”

On the courts, it became more aggressive: “I enormously made progress my service and my flight, which enables me to be more aggressive. Maintaining the play became very fast. One cannot hope any more to beat players while waiting for that the adversary makes the fault of itself. It should be caused. To some extent, to control its own destiny more. ”

In 1995, it reaches again the finale of Roland Garros but loses against Thomas Muster (7-5, 6-2, 6-4).

In 1996, it plays two other finales of Grand Slam: it loses in Australia against Boris Becker (6-2, 6-4, 2-6, 6-2) and with the US Open against Pete Sampras (6-1, 6-4, 7-6).

In 1997, it reaches the semi-finals of the tournaments of the Large Slam of Australia and US Open.

It stops its career in 2003 after having lost with the 1st turn of Roland-Garros and US Open.
