Meux is a common French, located in the department of the Charente-Maritime and the area Poitou-Charentes.

Geography

History

Geoffroy de Meux is attested lord of Meux in 1250 and its downward brings the ground of Meux in dowry at the time of sound maiage in 1444 with Louis Chesnel. The castle which had been destroyed by English during the Guerre one hundred year old is rebuilt of 1450 with 1480. It then had two turns which disappeared.

It is sold by Chesnel Marie-Angelica in 1712 and changes several times of hands before returning in Laage de Meux.

Administration

The commune of Meux was created in 1793, in the department of Charente-Lower which became Charente-Maritime in 1941. It belonged to the district of Pons then of the district of " Jonsac" in 1801 and always of the Canton of Jonzac.

Meux belongs to the vastest community of communes of France, the Communauté of communes of High-Saintonge the, with 122 other communes of the south of the Charente-Maritime representing 54.900 inhabitants and nearly 24% of the surface of the department.

Demography

It is during all the XIXe century that Meux saw its population decreasing, then it was stabilized.

Places and monuments

  • the Château of Meux was rebuilt at the 15th century after the departure of English. It is of blazing style, with a polygonal tower with bored roof with cut sides of a window decorated with stone embroideries. Around, a garden with the Frenchwoman was recomposed.
