METS (Metadata Encoding and Standard Transmission) is a diagram XML developed on the initiative of the DIGITAL Library Federation (DLF), and authorizing the creation and the integral description (descriptive, administrative and structural data) of textual or graphic numerical objects. Intended particularly for the exchanges between patrimonial institutions, METS is in conformity with the recommendations of OAIS (Open Archival Information System) and is currently maintained by the Bibliothèque of the Congress. METS will undoubtedly be the subject rather quickly of a standard ISO.
