The metropolitan region of the Estuary of Rio Itajaí ( Região Metropolitana da Foz C Rio Itajaí in Portuguese) was created in 2002 by the law n°221 of the State of Santa Catarina. It gathers five municípios forming a Conurbation around Itajaí. Four other municipalities form l'" surface of expansion" metropolitan region. On the whole, 9 municipalities are dependant in this territorial entity.

The main activities economic of the area is the Commerce, in particular related to the Tourisme. Indeed, tourist flows can reach more than 1,5 million people during the summer season, mainly in the municipality of Balneário Camboriú. Another important activity is the Construction. The area has an international airport, the aéroporto internacional of Navegantes, located in the homonymous city. One also finds there the port of Itajaí, the main thing of Santa Catarina and the second of the Brésil.

The metropolitan region extends on 719 km ² (991 km ² by counting the surface of expansion) for a total population of more than: 390000 inhabitants in 2006 (close to: 465000 inhabitants by counting the surface of expansion).
