Metropolitan region of Rio de Janeiro
The Metropolitan region of Rio de Janeiro xonnue also as Grand Rio was created by the complementary Law nº20 of July 1st 1974, after the fusion of the old States of Rio de Janeiro and Guanabara. It is the 19th larger metropolitan surface of the world, with 4.659 km ² for a population of 11.351.937 inhabitants ( IBGE 2005).
Its limits underwent modifications with the departure of the municipalities of Petrópolis (withdrawal in 1993), Maricá (withdrawal in October 2001), Itaguaí (withdrawal in July 2002) and Mangaratiba (withdrawal in July 2002) which formed also part of the Metropolitan region, in accordance with the first legislation.
