Metropolis of Tchéquie and Slovakia
The Metropolis of Tchéquie and Slovakia or orthodoxe Church of Tchéquie and Slovakia is a jurisdiction autocéphale of the orthodoxe Église. The chief of the Church carries the title of Métropolite of Tchéquie and Slovakia (titular current: Christophore, archbishop of Prague, since the May 2nd 2006).
History
The September 25th 1921, Matthias Pavlik, former priest roman catholic, is devoted bishop of Moravie and Silesia to Belgrade by the patriarch Dimitri, primacy of the Serb orthodoxe Église. It takes the name of Gorazd which was that of one of the disciples and successor of Méthode, the evangilisator of Moravie.
In 1923, the patriarch of Constantinople grants autonomy to the Church of Czechoslovakia and names Mgr Sabbazd métropolite. The majority of faithful continues to follow Mgr Gorazd.
During the second world war, the Church undergoes a very strong repression and many victims of which Mgr Gorazd.
In 1951, the Russian orthodoxe Église grants the autocéphalie to him. This statute will be recognized to him by Constantinople only in 1998.
Organization
The division of the Czechoslovakia in two new independent states starting from January 1st 1993 led to modifications structural of the Church. It is divided into two administrative centers: the metropolitan Council from the Czech Republic based in Prague (president: the archbishop of Prague) and the metropolitan Council of Slovakia based with Prešov (president: the archbishop of Prešov and Slovakia). A single Saint Synod however is maintained whose president carries the title of Métropolite de Tchéquie and Slovakia. This last can be only the archbishop's palace of Prague or the archbishop of Prešov and Slovakia.
