Metropolis Nelson Mandela

The metropolis Nelson Mandela is one of the 6 Municipalité S metropolitan of South Africa. Located in the Bay of Algoa in the Province of the Cape-Eastern , it includes/understands the Ville S and Commune S of Port Elizabeth, Uitenhage and Despatch.

In 2000, during the introduction of the new municipalities, the Agglomération of Elizabeth-Uitenhage-Despatch Port was unified and renamed " Nelson Mandela Metropole" in homage to the old South African president.

The municipality counts 1,5 million inhabitants (2001).

At the time of the municipal elections of March 1st 2006, the African National congress obtained 66% of the votes of the residents of the metropolis against 24% with the democratic Alliance.

Nondumiso Maphazi (ANC) was elected mayor the March 15th 2006, succeeding Nceba Faku.

It is in Port Elizabeth that is the Université of the metropolis Nelson Mandela (" Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University - NMMU), exit in 2005 of the fusion of the university of Elizabeth Port, the Port Elizabeth Technikon and the local campus of the University Vista.
