Method of the DSB

Method DSB or Deep Sand Bed (reads of thick sand) is a method of installation of vat récifal allowing the maintenance of corals and fish within the Aquarium.

The principle of this method is to use a thick layer of sand posed on the bottom of the aquarium. This one is colonized by pledged organizations on the ground like various bacteria but also a multitude of animals like digger worms, crustacean , annélides, Zooplancton, amphipodes, the Copepoda, macro-algae etc This sand is then called alive Sable.

These organizations are divided into two groups:

  • the Meiofaune are the living organisms on the substrate
  • the Infaune lives in the substrate

Sand used is sand of Aragonite (preferably) of granulometry lower than 1 Misters the layer, when with it, makes 10 cm thickness at least and can go up to 20 cm without there being truly limit.

The gravel of coral and sands harder have a tendency to imprison the refuses in excess as the size of the grain increases. They are thus disadvised.

The fauna of alive sand exploits the nutrients, in fact Nitrates, and then it rejète of the Azote which will be evacuated in the ambient air.

To supplement the method, it is also necessary to add alive stones.

Mixing must put in circulation 20 times the volume of water of the aquarium per hour. It is necessary to privilege a mixing of surface and an intermediate mixing of level, the sand of the bottom should not be disturbed.
