Metalliferous Mounts
The mounts Métallifères (in German Erzgebirge , in Czech Krušné hory ) are an assembly line in Germany and Czech Republic.
They form the border between the two countries, out of 150 kilometers, extending from the Western border of the Saxony until the Elba. The Western parts of the Métallifères mounts have the most raised peaks. More the high summits of this chain are, on the Czech side, Klínovec (: 1244 m) and, on the German side, Fichtelberg (: 1214 m). In the west, the Métallifères mounts are prolonged by Bavarian Fichtelgebirge, much less low. In the east, the sandstone mountains of Elba on two banks of the river Elba can be regarded as the Eastern prolongation of the Métallifères mounts. The Métallifères mounts have a soft slope on the northern slope, towards Germany, where the towns of Zwickau and Chemnitz are located on the hills, but the southernmost slope is extremely stiff. The Métallifères mounts were practically uninhabited with the Middle Ages and dense covers of forests. To the 15th century the discovery of the layers of money with Jáchymov and tin led to the colonization of the mountains and the creation of cities. The name is derived from the wealth of mineral resources. Today, these mountains became especially tourist places of winter sports (see section Climate ).
In the area of the ex- GDR, the exploitation of the Uranium led to the contamination of an area of 40 km ². Since their closing, the uranium mines are the subject of drainage works which do not prevent a particularly high rate of Cancer S.
Climate
The climate of the Métallifères mounts is very hard. One calls this area by derision Siberia saxonne or Bavarian, according to the case. It was not rare that during certain winters the cattle freezes in the cattle sheds and that important snowfalls in April recover farms. The population was often cut rest of the world. (sive city according to Athenaum Universitas Boemo-Zinnwaldensis (1717) of Peter Schenk).
The particular relief (rather soft slope of the North-East in south-east) receives all precipitations in a regular and prolonged way. The quantity of measured water is approximately double of the plain and the snow-covered cover can be very important until April.
When the wind comes from south-east (of Bohemia) it can cause a phenomenon of Foehn. Because of these extreme conditions, there exists close to Satzung (border zone) a natural forest of dwarf pines of mountain ( pinus mugo ). This vegetation meets normally in the Alps only between: 1600 m and: 1800 m of altitude. One thus can without exaggeration speech of alpine climate.
