History
Birth
Before 1980
Lars Ulrich was born the December 26th 1963 with Gentofte with the Denmark. He is educated in a supported medium, his father, Torben Ulrich, being a professional player of Tennis recognized in the whole world (he is also actor, musician, writer and painter). In 1973, a friend of Ulrich father, Ray Moore (a South-African jazzman which had come to play Copenhagen) takes along “ Lars to its first concert. ”. The boy (9 years old) appreciates so much the concert which it buys the last album of the group that it had seen the day before, Fireball of Deep Purple.Dave Mustaine, as for him, was born on September 13rd 1961 with Mesa, in the east of San Diego, in California. The father of Mustaine is agitated and unstable. Its blows of head oblige his/her mother to frequently move was one of my discs preferred with the White Album of Beatles That was one very formative period for me. ”. He is his first successes with a group named Panic. He thus leaves to the search other musicians to form a group. He meets the singer Paul Baloff quickly. The duet starts to write songs and creates the group Exodus.
Approximately three weeks after the birth of Hammett, a couple of the name of Jan and Ray Burton give rise to their son, Cliff Burton on February 10th 1962. It is then the youngest child of the family - it has a brother (Scott) and a sister (Connie). Described as being a very active child, it makes its studies with the college Earl Warren then with the college of Castro Valley. When it is adolescent, an event upsets its life: his/her brother dies of a cancer at 16 years. It is told that it is what justified Burton to make the low one.
At the school, he studies it theoretically and takes courses of September 1978 in January 1980, to which he makes progress enormously. The local groups are interested quickly in him: he off plays with AD 2 Million then with Agents Misfortune (moreover, the guitarist of this group - Jim Martin - will become later that of Faith No More). Thereafter, Jim Martin and Cliff Burton form another group of the name of EZ Street in which the beater Mike Puffy Bourdin officiates (he also future member of Faith No More). Later, free Burton EZ Street for a group of San Francisco named Trauma, like told it Jim Martin: “ Cliff with left EZ Street. Me I remained with the group and one continued during a small moment with ceaseless changes musicians Cliff and me, one continued with jammer most of the time with Dave Donato with the battery. ”. In 1976, his/her parents divorce. The following year, it returns to the college of Downey to the south of Los Angeles. It become acquainted there with Dave Marrs and Ron McGovney, all two fans of KIS and Aerosmith. In 1980, Hetfield assembles a group called Obsession, composed of the Veloz brothers (low, battery) and of a rhythmic guitarist, Jim Arnold. One year and half later, Hetfield, Jim Arnold and his Chris brother form the Stynx group in which they play only of the resumptions of Rush. But this association does not last, Hetfield leaving the group quickly. Hetfield meets a new guitarist of the name Hugh Tanner and, accompanied by McGovney to low, they form Phantom Lord. McGovney not knowing to play of low, Hetfield learns to him on the heap. James Hetfield is for the first time at the head of a serious group. McGovney told: “ One repeated with Hugh Tanner during a time. It was rather gifted Then one passed an advertisement to find a guitarist. A type which was called Troy James it answered and joined our group. ”. A few months later, the parents of McGovney, who have 3 houses, allow the group to settle free in one of them, which was going to be demolished to leave room to a new highway, the US 105. Phantom Lord changes name for Leather Charm, which adopts a sound more Glam Rock, with the Mötley Crüe. In August 1981, the Ulrich family moves with the the United States, Newport Beach, close to Los Angeles. The Ulrich young person takes one sabbatical year because it does not know if it wants to become Tennisman like his father. As of its arrival, it starts to be interested in the movement NWOBHM until becoming a specialist in this musical genre. It binds friendship with John Kornanens and Brian Slagel, fans like him of this movement. Kornarens will tell in connection with Ulrich: “ Lars lived in a house made up of three parts. Its room was in front of, vis-a-vis the garden. That of his/her parents was behind and between the two there was a small part. And, one day, it opens the door of this small part. It was entirely occupied by a very white battery. It settles behind its instrument and it starts to type above… anyhow”
During this time there, Hetfield and McGovney start to control their instruments: thanks to the courses of Hetfield, McGovney becomes a good bass player. In spite of that, they do not advance in their compositions. The group seeks a beater then. Hugh To tan the met in relation to Ulrich. Ulrich is auditioned, but its low level does not like Hetfield and McGovney - Troy James not forming part of the group.
1981-1982
At the summer 1981, Lars Ulrich announces with his parents that it leaves for Europe, more precisely in England, to follow the round of Diamond Head, one of its preferred groups. During the round, it meets Sean Harris, one of the members of Diamond Head. On its return of England, Lars like “is had” by the fact of assembling a group, it starts to seek musicians seriously.
During this time, Brian Slagel decides to launch a Fanzine named New Heavy Metal Re-examined which it writes at his place with John Kornarens. Later it decides to make a Anthologie name of The New Heavy Metal Re-examined Present Metal Massacres , which will be sold with the magazine. Lars Ulrich, packed by the project, called to Slagel that it will put one of his songs on the anthology… whereas it does not even have yet a group. Ulrich then telephones Hetfield which it had not re-examined since his not very conclusive hearing. James Hetfield testified: “ Lars said to me that it had a friend, Brian Slagel, which was going to leave an album Metal, and which it had accepted that him a title is provided. “I arrive immediately! ”, I howled! ”. A repetition is quickly organized at McGovney. Hetfield is then surprised: “ Lars had become a much better beater. And then it had a new battery blazing, authentic Camco. One played of the songs which I had written for Leather Charm, “Hit the Light” and “No Remorse”. ”. Hetfield and Ulrich become friendly then, they start to listen to discs together. Hetfield appreciates the European music quickly that Ulrich listening. The looping of the anthology approaching, the three accomplices decide to record the song “ Hit the Lights ”. It is a song fast and full with energy which tells that when the group goes up on scene, it is ready to be given thoroughly.
The group must then find a name to be credited on the disc. There are several theories as for the origin of the name Metallica. Some affirm that the group would have drawn its name from a book called Encyclopedia Metallica . Another theory, more probable, would be that it is Ron Quintana, editor of a fanzine, which had the idea of it. Ron would have required of Lars its opinion concerning the name of sound fanzine. He hesitated between Metal Handled and Metallica . Lars would have advised the first and " to him; emprunté" the second for his group. The group auditions a new black guitarist with the Jamaïcain accent of the name of Lloyd Grant, which takes the statute of provisional guitarist solo. The group passes then an advertisement in The Recycler whose contents would have been: “ one seeks a guitarist removed from rim solo and rapid ”. Certain Dave answers this advertisement. It is Dave Mustaine which with the experiment and the technique which misses then in Metallica.
Beginnings
1982
“ One had borrowed one four tracks Tascam and one recorded “Hit the Lights”. I ensured the song and I played of the rhythmic guitar and low. Lars, was to him with the battery. In fact one was only one duet. ”. The line-up of the group during the recording of the song is rather confused. The Solo S of the song - which are not played by Hetfield - are question of a vast debate. Mustaine have just arrived in the group, Lars and James wait until he proves reliable. It then records the solos of “ Hit the Light ”, but Lars Ulrich judge which it would be better than Lloyd Grant re-records them, as McGovney confirms it: “ Dave played the two solos of “Hit the Light” but, for the second, they kept the version of Lloyd, because they found it better. ”. It is known that the solo is recorded a few hours before Ulrich and Hetfield do not give the cassette to Brian Slagel for the mixing of the anthology. The recording on the 4 tracks explains why the song has a so bad sound.
Without Kornarens, the song would never have appeared on the anthology. Indeed, it is him which finances the mastering song (50$), whereas the group is completely mown. On the first pressing, Metallica is in fact spelled " Mettallica" , fault which will be corrected on the albums of the second pressing. On this one, the song is re-recorded, McGovney this time holds the low one and Mustaine carries out all the solos.
Beginning 1982, the group, which finds a certain stability, starts to repeat regularly in the garage of McGovney. James wonders then if it must play of the guitar and at the same time sing. It sometimes happens to him to say that it should concentrate on the guitar and leave the microphone to a better singer.
The members of the groups make odd jobs as recalled by McGovney “ James was with unemployment at the time, Lars worked during the night in a service station. And Dave was… a free lance. ” makes some, Mustaine earned its living by selling drug as it revealed it in 1999.
Ron McGovney becomes meanwhile the official photographer of Mötley Crüe.
It occurs a time before their third concert to the Factory Concert from Costa Mesa. Metallica recruits a second guitarist, Brad Parker (called Damien C. Philips), but this one is transfered: Brad Parker heats room while carrying out Solo S of guitar whereas the group is not on scene, which they do not like, even less with Mustaine which is the guitarist soloist. During the concert, the group plays a new piece called “ The Mechanix ”.
Power Metal
The group decides to make a new demonstration, this time only made up of original pieces. Are found on the cassette the pieces “ Hit the Lights ”, “ The Mechanix ”, “ Jump in the Fire ” and “ Motorbreath ” another news - and rapid - song. The demonstration is intended to ensure the promotion of the group near the clubs of Los Angeles.
The demonstration is named Power Metal because of a boob of McGovney: “ It is funny of history. I was to make print calling cards with the name of the group so that one sends them to persons in charge of club with our demonstration. The chart was just to comprise the logo of Metallica and our phone number. But I found that had the too unspecified air, then I decided to add something under the logo. I did not want to put “hard rock” nor “heavy metal”, then I had idea to put “power metal”. I found that sounded well. In so far as I know, no group had employed this expression before us. ” McGovney the Ulrich watch then who pricks a crisis: “ I brought the charts to the group but Lars has piqué a crisis by seeing them. It was really furious. “That is what you made ace? ”, it has request to me. “Whore, but is it what this Power Metal? I do not manage to believe that made you to a trick also idiot! One cannot use these charts with that above!” It is thus because of that the demonstration was called Power Metal. ”
The fourth concert of the group proceeds with the college of Lars (Backbay High School), on May 25th 1982. In a few years, the anthology is sold with approximately 30000 specimens, a first for a disc independent and carried out by one impassioned), Slayer (on the third), Voivod, Metal Church and Hellhammer (on the fifth).
After being itself again produced with the Factory Concert of Costa Mesa on June 26th, the members of Metallica make an important decision: they have now enough songs to be able to make a professional recording and to leave them on a cassette.
No Life Til' Leather
Metallica counts on the system of exchange of cassettes to make known itself with the eyes of the underground medium and can be to sign a contract with a recording company. These networks were a kind of proto- Internet, where the fans of groups shared the music which they knew while being exchanged of the cassettes.
The problem of the recording is quickly solved because Lars Ulrich becomes friendly with certain Kenny Kane, owner of a recording company. This last had seen Metallica in concert and was ready to make a recording: “ a guy of the name of Kenny Kane gathered a little money so that one can record with the Castle East Studios in Tustin, in California. One had written some songs meanwhile one continued to play 'Killing Time, “Let It Loose” and one or two titles of Diamond Head in concert. ”.
At the time of the Sessions of recording, Ron McGovney hardly appreciates Kenny Kane, as he will acknowledge it with Shockwave : “ Kenny Kane had a Punk label which was called High Velocity. It was a branch of Rocshire Records, recording company County an Orange. He had said that he would give us money so that a EP is made. one thus returned in studio. ”.
The demonstration, called No Life 'Til Leather, according to the first towards “ Hit the Lights ” and can be in homage of the album live of Motorhead, No Sleep 'Til Hammersmith, is diffused in the networks of exchange to full mode.
At the summer 1982, the relations between the members of Metallica become tended. Hetfield, seems it, did not appreciate: it calloté the animal, pushed back it or posed its hand (or its foot) on it (gently or brutally, one is unaware of it). “ James gave a kick to my bitch and one started with engueuler. A thing involves some another, I ended up striking it what I regret. ”.
After several concerts, in particular with the Metal Massacres Night , the relations between Ron McGovney and the other members of the group degrade themselves: as he even says it him, in connection with a voyage to go to make a concert with San Francisco: “ I had rented a trailer. One put at it the battery and all our material, one hung it to the van of my father and one all is ridden in the latter. I had ever gone to San Francisco before that. I remember to have made the turn of Chinatown with this trailer, and that started to make me shit to seek the club without being able to find it. The others were behind, with drinking and having fun, and me, I had full the bottom Ca of it started on our premises. My business disappeared. Worst it was when one played with Kaos, the group of my Jim buddy. Apparently a friend of Dave benefitted from it to steal my second low, Ibanez. My leather jacket had also disappeared. I had some really enough of all that. ”. The other members of Metallica realize that McGovney is with end of nerve and contact Brian Slagel then to find a new bass player. He advises to them to see the Trauma group “ because their bass player is brilliant ”. James Hetfield will entrust to Aardshock: “ One was really bluffés by this bass player hippie who headbangait all the time. ”.
Metal Up Your Ass
After four other concerts with Los Angeles and its surroundings, they rejouent in Old Waldorf on November 29th. This concert was important for three reasons: the Exodus group opened for them and among them young a 20 year old guitarist of the name of Kirk Hammett was; the concert was recorded and gave matter to a new demonstration, that the fans called Live Metal Up Your Ass - the sound which had at the origin being recorded with a table of mixing was finally recorded on one four track; and the piece “ Whiplash ” is played for the first time as a public Little time afterwards: “ After Dave screwed my low, when the others, I came to repeat said to them: “Foutez the camp of at home!”. I turned to James and I said to him: “I am sorry James, but you as, it is necessary as you leave”. Two days later, their material was not any more at home. ”
McGovney commented on these events to him: “ They is so old which that does not have any more importance today. I just said you what I felt at the time. I want that it is clear that this history does not annoy me any more. Ca occurred fourteen years ago. They are nothing any more but memories. I get along again well with them maintaining. ”, that they decide to leave Los Angeles for San Francisco so that Cliff Burton joins them (condition which it had imposed to the members of the group). The removal is finished in a few months and on December 28th, 1982 takes place the first repetition with Cliff Burton. An unexpected opportunity arises to the group when Whitaker says to them that it needs a group to record a demonstration (within the framework of its courses). James: “ One made a demonstration, free, of “Whiplash” and “No Remorse”. It had a very good sound. It was the best recording than one ever had up to that point. ”.
Later, the group settles in the district of Albany. Jeff Becerra of Possessed remembers: “ I grew with these types. Kirk lived with two steps of at home and it organized lunatic evenings. One also went to the others. They lived in a large dilapidated house of Albany, and one picolait there dry. Full people went to its festivals and came out from it torn. If somebody claims to remember one of his evenings, then that wants to say that it was not there! ”.
The success met in San Francisco with No Life 'Til Leather makes it possible the group to be put up to the climate with the city without hang, like points out it Bob Nalbandian “ thanks to the exchange of cassettes, Metallica was extremely popular in San Fransisco before to have even put there the feet. ”.
1983
“ Quelqu'un which one knew returned from San Francisco with a cassette, and he said: “Johnny, Marsha, it is necessary that you listen to that!” There was music in the store. I remember more the EC what it was, but it was metal. One never passed anything else. I thus stopped and I put his cassette in the tape recorder. It was to be fallen to the shift! ”.
Jon Zazula had listened at the time a copy of the cassette Live Metal Up Your Ass in the tape recorder of its store named Rock' Roll Heaven in the New Jersey. The cassette of the group finished with the quatres corners of the country from its exit, as quickly as No Life “Til Leather. Jon Zazula realized which had listened to something radically again: “ Ca resembled a little Motörhead and one found the spirit of the NWOBHM there. But it was American and it was new and better. I also found that the rhythmic secton was very melody. but when I say melody, I do not want to say commercial. It was a completely new way to approach the melodies. ”. In addition to having a store Jon Zazula organizes concerts and managed groups through its company Crazed Management. Lars is ready to go to New York, but the group is then without the penny, Zazula paid them the voyage. Lars Ulrich declared in connection with Dave Mustaine at the time of the voyage: “ During the voyage of San Fransisco to New York, our patience with reached its limits. There were some incidents of too. It was not able to be controlled. And it was more… On the long run it would have been a problem. One thus decided to return it, halfway between Iowa and Chicago. ”. According to the legend, when Mustaine awoke, its luggage were made and the other members of the group looked it of a dark air. Hetfield launched to him that it did not form any more part of Metallica. Dave required simply of what time took off its plane. Hetfield answered that they had held a place in a bus for him which left one hour later. Ten days before, Whitaker - also to manage Exodus - telephoned Kirk Hammett and asked him to come to New York to come to pass a hearing. Hammett was unaware of if it were going to remain a long time with the group, as it explains it later: “ It was a dared bet, parce q' there was the risk that they do not appreciate me. I travelled by the plane for the East coast with lein of material to my expenses. It was really odd because I left California for the first time of my life and moreover, it is hardly if I knew these types. The only one that I knew, it was Mark. ”.
Malheuresement, the group was to change place to sleep: whereas they were lodged by Jon and Marsha Zazula, the group drank a bottle of champagne at the time of their drinking bouts, whereas it was put on side by the couple for a particular event. The latter judged that could not last any more like that.
The roadies of Venom in addition failed to destroy Paramount Center while forcing on the pyrotechnical effects. In spite of these additional problems, Metallica and Venom agreed to say that these concerts were indisputable successes.
For Ulrich and Hetfield, the line-up of Metallica is not yet final: he hoped to recruit a new singer. They threw their reserved on John Bush, singer of Armored Saint, which despite everything their effort, will never join Metallica.
Little time afterwards, Hetfield and Ulrich revealed that they were going soon to record their first album. Lars had ideas stopped well concerning the disc: “ One retained only fast titles. If there is only that on an album, the pieces do not finish all resembling each other… When one plays of the fast songs, one essaire to put station-wagons at it because then, that gives the air of going even more quickly. ”. Jonny had then made the accounts: “ One had estimated that the realization of their album would cost us approximately 5000$ but, at the time, even the hundreds were rare… ”.
Zazula thus creates the label Megaforce (which in the beginning was to be called Vigilante). It is named thus because “ One day, one discussed with Cliff, and it found the name “Megaforce” ” remembers Zazula.
May 10th 1983, Metallica began the recording of its first album. Between two sessions, the group thought of the name to give for the album. It chose the title Metal Up Your Ass , but the company chosen to distribute the album opposed it. The group was to then find an alternative. Zazula declares on this subject that: “ What occurred, it is that Cliff said: 'Just kill “EM all”. And it became the name of the album! ”.
The mixing and the sound quality of Kill 'EM All are correct for an album of this time which with have a limited budget.
Thomas Fischer of the group Celtic Frost specified that the album influenced all the scene metal: “ It did not make of doubt for anybody who we were at the beginning of a new era for the heavy metal. what distinguished Metallica from the other young groups from then, it was its precision and the great professionalism - for the time - of its play and its production. They made a single musqiue, and Kill 'EM All represented a true innovation. With this album, they changed the rules of the day at the following day. ”.
The distribution of Kill 'EM All is ensured in the whole world: with the the United States by Relativity, the Netherlands by Roadrunner, with the Canada by Banzai, the Brazil by RGE and in France by Bernett. James Hetfield known as to have drawn from the lessons of the representations of the Raven group, that much regarded as " rock'n'roll athlétique" . Master off Puppets arrives at the 29e place of the classification of the Billboard, the album will be sold to 12 million specimens
Master off Puppets remains in the line of Ride The Lightning because it has the same musical structure (just like the following album … And Justice for All ):
- the first second are calm, of the acoustic guitars play a rather mélodieux air and the remainder of the first song is very rate/rhythm (even aggressive).
- the second song, rather long, gives its title to the album.
- third is heavy, with the slow tempo, and of simple structure.
- the fourth song is calm, almost a ballade.
- the penultimate song is instrumental and long.
- the last song starts by breaking a soft melody and is again very aggressive.
The group is allowed to make rather long songs, Master off Puppets , Disposable Heroes and Orion which exceeds the eight minutes.
The death of Cliff Burton
After several concerts with the the United Kingdom, Metallica goes in Scandinavia where he plays Olympen de Lund and Sonahallen of Stockholm, September 24th, 25th and 26th 1986.In the night of September 27th 1986, both dug peat of Metallica are on the road for a fourth concert with Copenhagen, the Danish capital. They roll on a country road between Stockholm and Copenhagen. In the neighborhoods of 05:15 of the morning, the driver makes a violent variation on its line and starts to make yaws. It loses the control of the vehicle: on its board the four members of the group are, Flemming Larsen (the technician of Lars), John Marshall, Aidan Mullen (assistants with the guitar) and the manager Bobby Schneider.
The bus overturns on the side of the road close to the town of Ljungby and immobilizes 50 meters further. Mullen and the Larsens, which slept in berths in bottom on the right, remain wedged during almost three hours until the firemen deliver them. Kirk is ejected of its berth and disappears, but returns to him and manages to leave by a side door. The passengers who succeed in extirpating carcass of the bus leave there with some minor wounds. Lars Ulrich breaks a finger, James Hetfield has some surface wounds and Kirk an eye with the brown butter sauce. Bobby Schneider has the dislocated arm and another member suffers from many contusions.
The accident is due to a sheet of ice that the driver - who at summer put out of cause - could not avoid. However, for the " Horsemen" furnace; , the driver had drunk this sad evening too much.
Cliff Burton slept on one of the berths higher than the back right-hand side, when the bus skidded. He is ejected by the window then is crushed by the bus. The young bass player dies on the blow, at 24 years.
Later, James, Lars and Kirk think of stopping the adventure. But the parents of the bass player, Jan and Ray, encourage the group to continue with the memory of their son. This incident also inspired Dave Mustaine, which composed the air of the song In my Darkest Hour (on the album of Megadeth So Far, So Good… So What! ) just after having learned its death. The words do not refer at all on the other hand to Cliff Burton.
The burial of Cliff takes place on October 7th 1986 in the vault of Castro Valley, his birthplace. A cassette Cliff' EM all leaves in its homage, and the instrumental piece To Live is to Die is dedicated to him. Towards the end of the piece, James Hetfield murmur a poem that Cliff Burton had recited during an interview:
When has man dregs He murders
Some leaves off the world
Thesis are the blade deaths which
Men miscall their lives
All this I boat bear
To witness any to skirt
Boat the kingdom off salvation
Take me home
(As an anecdote, the beginning of this sentence, “ When have man dregs He murders nap leaves the world off” had already been heard at the character of Merlin, in the film Excalibur, of John Boorman, in 1981.)
… And Justice for All

The group plans to separate, but finally decides to continue and recruits a new bass player, Jason Newsted (of the group Flotsam and Jetsam). Metallica records with “Newkid” EP Garage Days Re-visited before leaving a new album, at the end of 1988 … And Justice For All , of which the song To Live Is To Die is last testimony discographic of fire Cliff Burton, impressing genius of the composition.
The piece One will serve as a pretext for the first video clip of the group. One has a true story: that of the soldier who wishes to die rather than living an infernal existence after awfully being mutilated with the war and being become prisoner of his own inert body, at the hospital; thus taking again the work of Dalton Trumbo. The video clip precisely takes again the images of the film Johnny is gone-T from there war. A fact is to be noted on this clip: it was truly badly perceived by the fans of the first hour; what did not prevent for as much the group from creating sensation and to reach a new category of fans. Enormous a two years is followed from there world tour which will pass by Seattle in 1989, famous Doris (the name of the statue being reproduced on the small pocket of … and Justice for All ) throwing out of gear itself during the concert.
The Black Album

In 1991, Metallica returns with an album éponyme (commonly called Black Album), produced by Bob Rock. It is then the apogee of the group but the end of the period thrash. Indeed, the group largely reduces its speed and the complexity of its fronts , which do not remain about it less hookers. The formation appears on scene with dimensions of groups like AC/DC or Guns Pink or heavy-rockers Swedish Europe (in particular with the Tokyo-Dome), and engages an incredible round of almost four hundred concerts throughout the world during five years, playing on all the continents and creating even sometimes riots (with Djakarta), whose video testimony is available in the box Live Shit: Binge & Purge left in 1993.
.
Metallica, with the Black Album , in a certain way made metal accessible to the general public, in particular with the famous ballade Nothing else matters … As from this moment, Metallica will become a monster of the rock'n'roll and will practically never go down again of its pedestal.
In 1992, Metallica takes part in the concert given in homage to Freddie Mercury to Wembley. James Hetfield sings there in particular Stone Cold Crazy with the three surviving members of Queen.

After a long absence of the five year old studios, due in particular to two years and half of ceaseless rounds with concerts marathons of almost two heures, Metallica returns in 1996 with a new album: Load , acclaimed by criticism but denounced by certain fans of the first hour who do not appreciate the musical evolution of the group nor the new haircuts of the musicians. In 1997 leaves his/her twin brother ReLoad , which is the continuation of the recordings carried out at the time of the passage in studio of the group for the album Load , initially designed to be a double.

In 1998 Garage Inc leaves. an double album only made up of recoveries. The group thus pays homage to its principal influences: Discharge, Diamond Head, Black Sabbath, Danzig and the Misfits, Blue Öyster Cult, Thin Lizzy, Motörhead, Killing Joke, Blitzkrieg. Thereafter, Metallica will play with the symphony orchestra of San Francisco directed by Michael Kamen and will leave an album live this concert, S&M, as well as a DVD.
Meanwhile, Metallica signs for the first time individual dedicated to accompany a film (Mission impossible 2) with the title I Disappear . (James will take part in the original soundtrack of the film South Park a little later).
A little later Jason decides to leave the group. Officially for health reason (“ years of Headbang ing have abyss my cervicales ”), but more semi-officially because the musical orientation of the “Horsemen Furnace” is not appropriate to him any more and that the possessivity of James Hetfield prohibits to him to open at new musical horizons; he which did not compose since the album Doomsday for the Deceiver of Flotsam and Jetsam in 1986, if one excludes Blackened and My Friend Of Misery . It thus decides to concentrate on the many musical projects on which it has board with several musicians of reputation during the years (Andreas Kisser of Sepultura, Piggy and Away of Voivod, etc). In particular with the group Echobrain which it formed with Dylan Donkin (song and guitar) and Brian Sagrafena (battery), two young musicians of talent. The first album of the formation was launched in 2002. It joined the legendary Canadian formation thereafter Voivod in 2003.
St Anger

In 2003 leaves St Anger , marking the return to a more aggressive sonority. St Anger adopts indeed a style of Nu metal new kind.
Helped by the Bob Rock producer, whom it is asked to play of low on this album, Metallica diverts the fans by not proposing any solos, no ballade or power-ballade. It results from it an album deeply different from their preceding achievements. At the end of the sessions of recording, Robert Trujillo (ex- Suicidal Tendencies, Infectious Grooves and Ozzy Osbourne) becomes the new official bass player of the group.
Metallica takes part in the album homage to the Ramones ( We' Re has Happy Family ) with the title 53rd & 3rd . Other titles of the session ( Cretin Hop , Commando , Today Your Coils, Tomorrow The World and Now I Wanna Sniff Some Glue ) are present on individual the St Anger .
Documentary left in 2005: Nap Kind Off Monster , recalls the years of doubt of the combo between the departure of Jason and the edition of St Anger , between the crises and the slanging matches of James and Lars.
To note that Kirk Hammett took part in the last album of Carlos Santana, All That I Am , left in 2005.
New album
The group entered in studio in 2007 to record a new album produced by Rick Rubin (U2, Red Hot Chili Peppers, System off has Down, Rage Against the Machine, AC/DC, Slayer…). This album, according to the dires of the group, turns over has sonorities thrash metal, passing very close to even the punk one. According to the official site of the group, the pre-production of the next album came to a end and the " Horsemen" furnace; began the recording on March 12th, 2007.
But, in an interview of May 22nd, 2007, Robert Trujillo declares that the tracks of battery are currently recorded for 14 pieces. Maintaining the group makes a small pause and will again put themselves to record to prepare their round in July 2007, they will take again then the direction of the studio (in August). According to the dires of Robert, the album, which is not envisaged before January 2008, is " dynamics, heavy and groovy": For me, this album incorporates part of the dynamism and character of " Master Off Puppets" , with just as easily the melody style that people appreciated on the black album, and also far that relates to the melodies. It confirms also that there will be solos and that the sound of battery, which was very reproached the group on the album St Anger, was re-examined… Lastly, both " news chansons" that Metallica had played at the time of concert, will not make part of the album, or all at least not as we heard them.
Many rumors circulate on this new album which would be called " Not Dead" , it would be composed of 14 titles, and it should leave on January 9th, 2008! Here what to charm the fans! But the title of the album was contradicted by the group, affirming that it does not have a name yet.
