Mestwin Ier de Poméranie

Mestwin Ier de Poméranie (in Polish Mściwój I Gdański , known also under the names of Mszczuj I Gdański or Mściwoj I Gdański ) was born towards 1150 and deceased on May 1st, 1219 or 1220. It is Palatin ( princeps ) of Poméranie Eastern.

Mestwin is the son of Subisław I {{er}} of Poméranie. Towards 1190, it Marie with certain Zwinisława (or Zwnisława) which will give him 9 children including 4 wire (Świętopełk, Warcisław, Sambor and Racibor). After the death of his/her brother Sambor I {{er}} of Poméranie, it is named governor of Poméranie Eastern by Ladislas III with the Legs Hails. Towards 1207, it takes advantage of its rights on the area Wyszogród when the local dynasty, from which his/her mother is resulting, dies out.

At the beginning of the 13th century, the king Valdemar II of Denmark lance an expansion policy on the grounds the Baltic. When this one makes main of the Western Poméranie and undertakes the conquest of the Estonia, Mestwin returns a to him Hommage of Vassal ité in 1210. This allegiance is of short duration. Mestwin adopts the Poland when Lech the White assembles on the throne of Cracow in 1211. In May 1212, it takes part in the assembly of the Duc S and bishop S Polish which takes place in the village of Mąkolin. The exact circumstances which led Mestwin to pay a homage of vassalage to Valdemar remain rather mysterious. It is possible that Mestwin, which was only one governor having the statute of duke, wanted to transform its Province/Duché into Principauté under the protection of the Denmark. The Danish files give him the title of prince Polish, whereas on a document compiled at the time of the assembly of Mąkolin it carries the title of duke ( dux ). In a document promulgated by Mestwin towards 1213, in which it confirms the foundation of the Monastère of Żukowo, it gives itself the title of prince ( princeps ).

After his death, his/her oldest son Świętopełk succeeds to him, and during 20 years, endeavors to equip out of grounds his/her young brothers.
