Messengers jazz
The Jazz Messengers (messengers of the jazz) is a group of Jazz created in 1953 by Art Blakey and Horace Silver. If this last left it in 1956, Blakey remained the leader and the mentor about it, so that his name and its career is closely associated there. Credit during more than thirty years, this group is the precursor of the Hard bop and was characteristic of this current as well by its style as by his composition, a critic of jazz will even say that it is the “definition of the hardware bop”. It was also under the impulse of Blakey a formidable springboard for many young talents which became major artists of the Jazz.
Biography
The first mentions of the “Messengers Jazz” appear with the club of jazz Birdland of New York to indicate a quintet set up by the Batteur Art Blakey and the pianist Horace Silver surrounded first once in 1953 of Lou Donaldson at the Saxophone viola, Kenny Dorham with the trumpet and Gene Ramey with the Contrebasse then one second time in 1954 with Lou Donaldson, Clifford Brown with the trumpet and Curly Russell with the double bass.But the official birth of the group is in 1955 on the initiative of Silver and gathers in addition to Silver and Blakey, again Dorham with the trumpet, Hank Mobley with the saxophone tenor and Doug Watkins with the double bass. In 1956, Silver leaves the group to found its own quartet and Blakey becomes the single leader about it. Since, with the liking of the evolutions of the group, many young people talented musicians made there their classes, Blakey remained about it the leader until his death in 1990.
The Messengers Jazz will be one of the headlights groups of the label Blue Note. Horace Silver, which was " découvert" by Stan Getz which engaged it, is one of the large type-setters of these years 54-55 which will see the label Blue Note taking truly its rise. Two leaders in a group it is too much. Horace left, without really leaving. It was going to continue its career within Blue Note. This group, directed by Art Blakey, which made a true school of the jazz of it - passed in this group, Clifford Brown, Kenny Dorham, already known when it replaced Brownie and especially Lee Morgan becoming the trumpet player which counts in this end of the year 1950, beginning of the year 1960 and, on the side of the saxophonists, Hank Mobley one of large under estimated of all the history of the jazz which counted much of it and Wayne Shorter. He is not the creator of the style hardware bop - it is Miles Davis, once again which launched this new name by recording Walkin' with Lucky Thompson, another large forgotten, in 1954.
