The Messénie (in Greek old Μεσσηνία , modern transliteration: Messinia , old: Messēnía) is an area in the south-west of the Peloponnese.
In the mythology, it was the kingdom of Apharée, which offered asylum, and later bequeathed its kingdom, with Nélée when the latter was driven out of Thessalie. Then it was directed by the son of Nélée, Nestor.
After the invasion dorienne, Messénie was directed by Cresphonte, then by its young person sons Æpytos, which gave its name to the royal line of Messénie.
After the first and the second war of Messénie against Sparte, with the {{VIIIe}} and {{VIIe}} front centuries J. - C., the country was conquered by the Spartans and Messéniens reduced to the statute of Hilotes.
Their rising for independence after the earthquake of 464 was completed by the rendering of their fortified town of Ithômé, after a long seat.
During the Peloponnesian War, Messéniens were encouraged with the revolt by the Athéniens, and this threat increased concerns of the Spartans.
In 369, the general thébain Épaminondas carried out the independence of Messénie.
To second century BC, it passed, with the remainder of Greece, under the control of the Romains.
