The Real Book (named thus by allusion to the Bible, The Good Book , in French “the True Book”, even if this term is uncommon), is a book which gathers many standard of jazz.

This term in general indicates the 1st volume of a series transcribed and gathered by students of the Berklee College off Music during the Années 1970.

The bass player Steve Swallow and the pianist Paul Bley dealt with the transcription of the book. This is why their compositions and those of other people of their entourage constitute a broad part of Real Book, among standard and traditional compositions of Jazz.

There were three editions of Real Book. Volumes 1 and 2 are handwritten, third is printed with the computer.

Real Book became the essential resource of any musician of jazz out of grass. It is also very practical for the professional musicians to work starting from the “Book” ( The Book ), because it is available in various editions to be appropriate for the instruments in B flat, E flat or in tonality of reference (in C, or concert-pitch ): a team leader can announce the numbers of page, experienced players can at a single glance read pieces which they do not know.
