Merzig-Wadern
The district of Merzig-Wadern , in German Landkreis Merzig-Wadern , is a administrative division German, located in the Land of the Saar. Merzig-Wadern is the largest district of the Land of the Saar. Its chief town is Merzig.
Geographical location
It has limits with, in north, the district of Trier-Sarrebourg (the Rhineland-Palatinat), in the east the district of Saint-Wendel, in the south the district of Sarrelouis and in the west the department French of the the Moselle and the Luxembourg.
The the Saar crosses the district, the the Moselle form the border in the west with the Luxembourg.
History
The district was creates in 1816 when the territory becomes property of the Prussia. After the First World War, the territory of the the Saar is managed by the Société of the Nations, which divides the district into two parts. The part around Wadern remains with the Prussia, while the territory around Merzig becomes property of the the Saar. In 1935, the the Saar joined the Germany and, after the Second world war, the two parts are joined together in the new district of Merzig-Wadern.
