Mertolenga

The mertolenga is a bovine race Portuguese.

Origin

It belongs to the red branch of the fair Rameau and red. The herd book goes back to 1979. It would be a subrace of the Alentejana, distinguished by its own characters since more than one century. Manpower is in light progression, around 20000 heads, but only 9500 cows are registered with the register.

Morphology

It wears a mouchetée white dress of red. The head and the legs are red, the trunk of almost white with almost completely red. The mucous membranes are red, and the long horns in high quadrant in the cow and rounds forwards in the male.
Elle is of intermediate size: 120 cm for 350 kg in the cow and 130 cm for 550 kg in the bull.

Aptitudes

It is a race raised in the past for its labor force.
C' is a race rustic and adapted well to the breeding in the open air integral. It resists the estival dryness well. The cow is a good mother. She vèle easily, raises well her calf thanks to her rich milk and profits from a good longevity. She is ideal for the breeding in industrial crossing, on the condition of keeping part of the breedings in pure race for the renewal of the mothers.
