Merpins

Merpins is a common French, located in the department of the Charente and the area Poitou-Charentes.

Geography

Commune located on left bank of the Charente downstream from Cognac. It is bordered in the West by the Né which marks the limit with the Charente-Maritime. The friable limestone ground forms a plain which belongs to the area of large champagne

History

The presence of a necropolis with circular ditches in Fontenelles attests of one occupation at the protohistoric period.

A site of tegulæa announced near the village of the Life. There was thus an activity of manufacture of tiles at the time Roman.

The camp of the Old man-Merpins present of the vestiges of habitat and furniture over one period extending from the final Bronze IIIb (IX° front century J-C) at the Old 1° of iron (V° front century J-C)

Protohistoric Oppidium then castrum

In Charente amphoras, tegulæa, ceramics were found fragments.

March 7th, 1787 the representatives of Merpins at the preliminary assembly of the General states which is held with the chapter house of Récollets de Cogac are Guill.Frouin and Th.Mesnard

Taxation

The taxation is of a rate of 8,18% on the frame, 33,91% on not built, and 7,36% for the tax of dwelling (figures 2007).

The community of communes of Cognac takes 12,14% of professional tax.

Demography

Places and monuments

  • Castle-extremely which was taken by the Normands in 850. A tower dates from Xème century and the northern wall of the XII°. Taken by Richard Lion-hearted, it was repaired by Jean without Ground. Begun again by the king of France? he passes by again with the English in 1360 to be besieged then destroyed in 1387.
  • Abbey of the Benedictines of Frenade, founded in 1140, destroyed at the time of the wars of religion and of which there remains only the southern wall of the nave of the XII° and the chapter house of the beginning of the XVI°.
  • Church given in 1030 to the Abbey of Souvigny (To combine) which founded the priory Saint-Alban Saint Remi of which there remains shortly after a restoration in 1774 and a rebuilding with the XIX° century
