Meridiani Planum

Meridiani Planum is a plain of the localized Planet Mars par. Its name comes from its position over Mars. Indeed the First meridian line passes by the crater Airy-0 located in Meridiani Planum.

In 1870, at the time of its observations, Camille Flammarion had named this zone Sinus Meridiani i.e. the bay of the meridian line . The name Terra Meridiani was also used.

Localization

Meridiani Planum is located at the East of Valles Marineris and at the North-West of Hellas Planitia.

Geology

This zone with the characteristic to conceal gray Hematite. This ore either is worked by water, or by volcanic activity.

In 1998, the thermal spectrometer of emission (YOUR) of Mars Global Surveyor detects on the level of the area of Meridiani Sine a strong concentration of Hématite, a Oxide iron Ⅲ of Fe2O3 formula.

Because of this hematite, the scientists suspectent this place as being in the past immersed.

Exploration

It is the place of landing of the robot Opportunity of the mission Mars Exploration Rover.
