The Mercury Music Prize is an annual reward which devotes the best the last twelve months British or Irish album. Create in 1992 it wants to be an alternative to the Brit Awards, too commercial. It is allotted by a very restricted panel individuals resulting from music industry. One often reproaches him for yielding to the Hype and the mode. One also reproaches him for forgetting the independent labels. The nominated ones are generally known during July. The French equivalent is the Prix Constantin, the Canadian equivalent the Polaris Music Prize.
