Mercure de France is a Magazine French founded at the end of the 17th century by Donneau de Visé, first of all in the form of a weekly magazine, the Gallant Mercure , of which the goal was to inform the public of the most various subjects and to publish poems or historiettes. The first delivery goes back to 1672. It is also a Publisher.
The Mercure of which it is question is the Roman god of the trade and the robbers, the messenger of the gods, whom the traditional tradition ended up confusing with the Greek god Hermes, protective god.
The review will continue to appear beyond the death of its founder. In 1724, it changes title and becomes the Mercure de France . the Toothing-stone is the writer during twenty years, associated with Mallet of the Side. It will cease appearing in 1825.
At the end of the 19th century the literary review of the Mercure de France is founded by Alfred Vallette with a group of friends whose meetings took place with the coffee of the Mother Clarisse, street Jacob. Let us quote Jean Moréas, Ernest Raynaud, Jules Renard, Remy de Gourmont, Louis Dumur, Alfred Jarry, Albert Samain and Saint-Pol.-Russet-red: the generation Symbolist. First delivery of the review dated January 1st, 1890. The review reaches the recognition gradually. Mallarmé and Heredia makes there appear some news. It becomes semi-monthly in 1905. Such a success, in a strongly competing sector, is explained by large serious, a very great freedom of tone and a capacity to be been above the schools.
In 1889, Alfred Vallette wife the novelist Rachilde whose work and personality will make much for the radiation of the review. Author of the scandalous Mr Venus , which will be worth to him a judgment for insult with the moralities, it takes part in the review until in 1924 and will hold living room every Tuesday, famous “Tuesday of Mercury”, which transfer to ravel good number of futures great writers.
Like many reviews, the Mercure will start to publish books. In addition to the texts symbolic systems and the first translations of Nietzsche in French, the editor will publish the first texts of Gide and Claudel, of Colette, Apollinaire. Later: Henri Michaux, Pierre Reverdy, Pierre-Jean Jouve, Louis-Rene of the Forests, Pierre Klossowski, Eugene Ionesco and Yves Bonnefoy.
In 1958, the editions Gallimard repurchase the Mercure de France whose direction is entrusted to Simone Gallimard. In 1995, Isabelle Gallimard takes the direction of the prestigious publisher.
