Mercedes Peón

Biography

Mercedes Peón is currently regarded as one of the most important voices of the Galicia. Cornemusor of talent, it starts while singing in the group Matto Congrio, even if it does not appear on the only recording carried out by the group.

After having traversed during tens of years the Galician villages with a recorder in order to save part of the oral Inheritance, it obtains a few minutes per week in the program televised Luar where it speaks musical ethnography and presents the fruit of its research.

It records for the first time on the first album of Xosé Manuel Budiño, where it interprets three topics, thus marking the beginning of complicity between the two musicians.

After having briefly created the group Ajrú, of which the only recording is on compilation Naciones Celtas II , the singer continues to collaborate with various artists (like Os Diplomáticos of Assemble-Viola and the Mano Negra) before recording its first disc in solo, Isué (2000). She gives to it her personal interpretation of the topics which she had safeguarded during years on her recorder. The innovation is if striking that the rewards rain in its country as outside (we can quote in particular better disc 2000 for the review Folkworld as well as a nomination for Meilleure artist of the year on Radio operator BBC 3). The change is also carried out on the level of its look, considering which it shaves its legendary long hair (which went down on the level from the belt).

In 2003, it returns with Ajrú which confirms its impetus in exploration world and the diffusion of an inheritance.
