The Mercedes-Benz 190 and 300SL “butterfly” are models of Automobile S in two places Coupé and Cabriolet of the German manufacturer Mercedes-Benz marketed 1954 with 1963 entered since the Légende of the Automobile S of Rêve.

History

The model 300SL, based on a car of competition to success, is famous to be the first car equipped with the injection of gasoline. " 300 " indicates that the Moteur has a Cylindrée of three liters.

80% of the production were sold with the the United States, as had predicted it its importer max Hoffmann, which strongly contributed in this country to give at Mercedes-Benz an indication of sporting and even sexy cars. It was built in Acier except for the cap, of the doors and the trunk which were in Aluminum. It was possible to order a body very out of aluminum which made it possible to reduce the vehicle of 80 kg for a higher price (only 29 specimens were thus produced in 1955 (26 e.g.) and 1956 (3 e.g.)).

Doors butterflies

The Coupé is equipped with doors butterflies, technical solution adopted because of the tubular frame and the high threshold of the door. These doors butterflies have like major disadvantage to pour the Eau Pluie on the head of the occupants at the time of their opening. It was sold of 1954 with 1957. The entry and the exit of the car require a little gymnastics while obliging to slip or sit down initially on the threshold. That is facilitated by the swing of the wheel.

First direct fuel injection engine of gasoline

The Driving tilted with 50º to allow a low cap on the left is the 3 Liter S six Cylindre S on line of the Berline, with a system of injection Bosch Mécanique] which largely doubled the power, of 115 horses in version carburettor the engine passes to 240 horses to 6.100 tours/mn. This new system, based on certain patents Citroen concerning the Turbulence at the end of the compression, allowed a theoretical speed of 235 km/h, transforming it into the fastest car of the world at the time and to some extent the first supercar.

The aerodynamic plays a big role and the Engineer S went even until installing ailerons above the notches of the openings of the wheels. Being given the general style it was suggested that these ailerons were added to return it more arousing to the purchasers states-uniens being given the Kitsch style of the time. Contrary to the cars of the Années 1950 the direction is reasonably precise and, the rather comfortable suspension independent. On the other hand the back suspension with half trees swivelling because of the material changes of hunting on bad coating or at high-speed is relatively capricious.

Original version SLR gained the Thousand Miglia 1955 with a mean velocity of 157,65 km/h out of 1.600 km as well as the 24 hours of Mans and various Grand Prix.
