History
The valley of Meran was inhabited since the third millennium before JC, as the presence testifies some to menhirs and other vestiges. The history of the city starts truly into 1500 before JC when the Romans occupied the valley of the Adige by establishing a military camp there, Castrum Majense.Merano obtained the statute of city at the 13th century. This was very important for the area of the the Tyrol between 1418 and 1848. After the county had been given to the family of the Habsbourg in 1363 after the abdication of the countess Margarete Maultasch of the Tyrol, Frederic IV installed the court with Innsbruck. So Merano lost of its influence and almost all its economic importance as a road junction between the Germany and the Italy. Important Hôtel of Finances was also transferred to Hall in 1577. The aspiration with the freedom of the inhabitants of the Tyrol in 1809 again drew the attention to Merano. This year, in Küchelberg above the city, the Tyroleans gained a victory over the French troops and bavaroises. After the First World War, Merano became Italian with whole share with the remainder of the the South-Tyrol. The objective of the fascistic mode was to assimilate the citizens of German language by the massive surge of nationals coming from all Italy. Contrary to what occurred for Bolzano, it was a failure because of skilful negotiations of the local municipal officials having at their head the baron Marcart. Nevertheless, all the toponymic names of origin tyrolienne were prohibited and Italianized (even, of family names were not used any more until the end of the Second world war).
