Geography

The village is located a little at the variation of the N83 road connecting Belfort to Mulhouse and 9 km of Belfort. The territory of the commune covers 469 ha including 230 ha of agricultural space and 101 ha of forest. It is skirted to the East by the Madeleine, small river taking its source in the solid mass of the Vosges.

History

Menoncourt is quoted for the first time in 1347. On this date the division of the goods of Jeanne of Montbeliard takes place. The village, which depends on the seigniory of Rougemont-the-Castle, falls then to his/her Ursule daughter. In 1351, the archduke Albert II of Austria, husband of Sleeve-board of Ferrette, another girl of Jeanne, repurchases with her sister-in-law her stronghold of Rougemont. Thus Menoncourt becomes possession of the House of Austria and until in 1648 will remain it, at the end of the Guerre Thirty Year old. As from the 18th century, it depends on the parish of Phaffans and concerns the county then Belfort (in Mazarin), as well as seigniory of Rougemont (Rosen and Rottembourg), of Reinach, Werth and Wessemberg. Of 1913 with 1948, the line Belfort Etueffont of the Railroad of Local Interest of the Territory of Belfort served the village.

Administration

Menoncourt is a common French, located in the department of the Territoire of Belfort and the area Franche-Comté. It is administratively attached to the Canton of Fountain and belonged to the Communauté of communes of the Lime. It is twinned with Zékounga (Burkina Faso) since the beginning of the years 1980.

Demography and economy

The village gathered 40 residences in 1760. In 1803, the population was of 241 inhabitants, until reaching 293 h. in 1860. It was gone down to 124 inhabitants because of the rural migration but the development of the use of the cars as from the years 1960 supported individual construction by inhabitants working sometimes with tens of kilometers (Belfort, Mulhouse, Sochaux…). There were 356 Menoncourtois in 1999. The population of 430 inhabitants in 2006 is divided between the borough (370 hab.) and the hamlet of Errues (60 hab.).
