Menlo Park is a city of the Comté of San Mateo in California. It counted 29  811 inhabitants in 2003 according to an estimate of the Office of the census of the United States.

Geography

Menlo Park is located at 37°27' 15" north, 122°10' 43" west (37.454188, -122.178579).

According to the Office of the census, the city has an total surface area of 45,1 km ², of which a terrestrial surface of 26,2 km ². It is bordered by the towns of Palo Alto and East Palo Alto and the Université of Stanford in south-east, Redwood City and Atherton in the west and Woodside in south-west.

The main street of the city east Santa Cruz Avenue, which crosses the avenue of El Camino Real. The Menlo Park Civic Center is delimited by Ravenswood Avenue, Alma Street, Laurel Street and Burgess Drive, and accommodates the offices of the Municipal council, the Bibliothèque, the station of police force and Burgess Park.

Demography

In 2000, the city counted according to the census 30  785 inhabitants, 12  387 hearths and 7  122 families. The Population density was of 1  173,4/km ². Menlo Park counted 12  714 residences with an average density of 484,6/km ². The ethnic composition of the inhabitants the city is composed   as follows;: 72,35% of white, 7,03% of Afro-American S, 0,44% of Amerindian, 7,15% of Asian origin, 1,26% of origin océanienne, 8,56% declaring itself like mixed and 3,21% of two races or more. The Hispanic ones or latinos accounted for 15,60% of the population.

Among the 12  387 hearths, 26,6% had children of less than 18 years, 46,3% were married couples living together, 8,5% were a hearth with a woman without husband present and 42,5% were not families. 32,1% of the hearths were composed of an individual and 11,4% only included a 65 year old person or more alive. The intermediate size of the hearths were among 2,41 people, and that of the average family of 3,12 people.

For the distribution by age brackets, 21,9% of the population had less than 18 years, 6,2% between 18 and 24 years, 34,7% between 25 and 44 years 21,4% between 45 and 64 years, and 15,9% were 65 years old or more. The median age was 37 years. There were 94 men for 100 women, and 90,6 men for 100 18 year old women or more.

Median income by hearth étaitn of 84  609  US dollars, and median income by family of 105  550  $. The men had a median income of 79  766  $, against 51  101  $ for the women. The Income per head was of 53  341  $. Approximately 4,2% of the families and 6,9% of the population were located under the Poverty line, including 8,8% of the inhabitants of less than 18 years and 7,3% of more than 64 years.

History

Menlo Park holds its name of the village of Menlough, in the Comté of Galway, in Ireland, from where Dennis J. Oliver and D.C emigrated. McGlynn in 1853 to build there residences for small farmers, workmen and servants working in the manors close to Atherton. An arch carrying the inscription “  Menlo Park  ” until 1922 the entry of the real development marked, a name which took again the railway line between San Jose and San Francisco for the station serving it (the station of Menlo Park is oldest today still in continuous service in California).

The development was the second city incorporated as a municipality in the Comté of San Mateo in 1874, but dissolved in 1876 by its residents to avoid additional taxes.

During the First World War, the city was transformed by the arrival of some 43  000 soldiers, with the drive with Camp Fremont, a dissolved military base shortly after end of the conflict.

The town of Menlo Park was again built-in 1927.

Economy

Menlo Park, one of the three Stanford Cities (two others being Palo Alto and Atherton), is located at the south-eastern end of the county of San Mateo, separated from the Comté of Santa Clara by San Mateo Creek. Bordering the University of Stanford, and she is often regarded as belonging to the historical heart of Silicon Valley. She is crossed by Sand Hill Road, an road axis which is used as address with the Center of the linear accelerator of Stanford and at many companies of Capital risk, in particular Capital Sequoia and Elevation Partners.

The city also accommodates the offices of the western area of the United States Geological Survey, as well as the University and seminar Saint Patrick.

  • Menlo Park is often confused with place synonymous with New Jersey, where Thomas Edison, then sometimes called “the magician of Menlo Park”, had its laboratory of 1876 to 1883.
  • the Pont of Dumbarton ( Dumbarton Bridge ), which spans the bay and connects Menlo Park to Fremont, is named according to the town of Dumbarton in Scotland.
