Meneltarma

In the Ground of the Medium of Tolkien, Meneltarma , meaning the Pillar of the Skies , was a mountain crowned in the center of the island of Númenor. It is called Minûltarîk in Adûnaic.

It has a top broad and flat, able to contain a great number of people during the religious ceremonies. Moreover, no building is set up there and the ceremonies take place with open sky.

An absolute silence is necessary with whoever climbs there. The tradition is so powerful and universal that even the foreigners felt prevented by it. Only the King was authorized with speaking to carry out prayers and offerings with Eru Ilúvatar, during the festivals of Erukyermë, Erulaitalë and Eruhantalë.

The birds and the animals did not approach the place, and only the eagles of Manwë could be observed revolving around the top. They were then regarded as the guards of the mountain and the grounds.

The base of Meneltarma rather soft and was divided into five branches, each one pointing towards one of the five extensions of the island. These roots carried like name Tarmasundar , the roots of the Pillar . On the southern slope the tombs of the Kings and Reines of Númenor were, with the hollow of a named valley Noirinan .

In year 3319 of the Second Age, Númenor was destroyed and submerged by the ocean. The last Queen of the island tried to reach the top of Meneltarma during the immersion, but it was taken by water while it tried to reach the top.

A rumor, launched by the descendants of Eärendil, tells that the top of the crowned mountain still emerges from the ocean. The legend says that which would find the island, could foresee the Immortal Grounds.
