Menegroth

In the work of J.R.R. Tolkien, Menegroth (in Sindarin “Thousand Caves”) was with the First Age the vast palate underground of Thingol, the king of the elves of Beleriand. It was built on the council of its queen Melian like place-strong against Morgoth, in a rock hill on the southern bank of the Esgalduin, in the middle of Doriath.

Thingol obtained the assistance of the dwarf of Belegost to carry out most of the work of excavation; the embellishment was carried out jointly by the dwarves and the elves on reasons inspired for the visions of Valinor suggested by Melian. One reached the doors of Menegroth by a bridge thrown on Esgalduin. Menegroth was regarded as the most splendid royal residence which was ever carried out in the east of the Grande Sea.
