Mendes handbook

Manuel Mendes (born v. 1547 with Lisbon and dead the September 24th 1605 with Évora) was a type-setter Portuguese of the Renaissance. While its compositions remain far from known, Mendes is famous to have formed the majority of the type-setters of the golden age of the Portuguese Polyphonie, such as Filipe de Magalhães, Duarte Lobo and Manuel Cardoso.

Biography

Mendes studied the music at the school of Évora during its childhood. Later, it was named choirmaster to the cathedral of Portalegre but returned in Évora to receive its diploma in 1575. It is at this period that it became teaching. Its pupils count among the Portuguese type-setters most famous of the 17th century (like Duarte Lobo, Manuel Cardoso, Filipe de Magalhães or Manuel Rebelo). He dies in 1605 in Évora.
