Menalamba

Two months hardly after the capitulation of Ranavalona III, the insurrection which begins in the west from Tananarive with some partisans gains ground to form the movement Menalamba - " the togas rouges" - which extends in several places through the country.

This insurrection is initially a revolt of the elements more the traditionalists against the Christians and the oligarchy Merina which appeared unable to preserve the country and the queen vis-a-vis the French occupant.

She transforms herself then into continuation of the war against the occupant

Pacification is carried out by Gallieni. Itself will acknowledge to have had " the hand lourde" , the massacres perpetrated in particular by colonel Combes in the east, the commander Gerard in the west, will contribute to do of this movement one of the emblems of the Malagasy national feeling.

The Prime Minister Rainilaiarivony is off-set as of October 1895 in Algeria, the Queen Ranavalona III in the island of the Meeting, then in Algeria where she dies in 1917.

The dynasty is extinct. But the people reappear in a new breath: Malagasy nationalism was born.
