The men in black (called “men in English black”, shortened in MIB ) is a collective term which nominates fictitious persons resulting from the American folklore . Their goal would be to prevent the Humanité from reaching the knowledge of source Extra-terrestre, considered to be too dangerous for its survival. They would be generally presented in the form of agents working for the American federal government and would get dressed in black or gray. Scenario writers often benefitted from their vague description to introduce them into various episodes of televised series.

It is Gray Barker, in the traditional one of the ufology They knew too much butt flying saucers , which introduced for the first time the set of themes of the men in black. Some ten years ago, John C. Sherwood revealed finally that Gray Barker published in its fanzine ufologic, in the form of articles, (thus presented as objective) of the texts which at the beginning were subjected to him as being news of Science-fiction. The men in black are thus a legend which it created of all parts, before it is recovered and repeated in the folklore ufologic.

These people, sometimes of female sex, only present themselves or groups some (generally a trio) in the residence of the witness of an extraterrestrial event after a time which can vary one day in several months. The witness the interpreter sometimes like government officials charged to choke the business, sometimes like nonhuman creatures (Extraterrestrial S or Humanoïde S) with the mysterious objectives. They are often vêtus costumes (tailors for the women) dark or gray, in general in the style of the years of post-war period whatever their date of appearance, like besides their cars, when they have some.

Their recurring presence in the accounts of people claiming to have seen a UFO or to have met extraterrestrial pushed the American ufologist S to allot to them the collective name of “  men in black  ”.

A cartoon, Men in Black , and two films, Men in Black and Men in Black II , are drawn from this folklore.

Origin and evolution

This character seems to take his origin shortly after the Second world war in an account brought back in the press, and proven thereafter untrue, of meeting with UFO, in June 1947 with Maury Island close to Tacoma. The principal protagonist, Harold Dahl, claimed to have received the shortly after the meeting the visit of a man carrying a black suit similar to that of the agents of the Gouvernement and leading a new Buick; the man would have required silence under penalty of reprisals.

Thereafter, the MIB will be often represented in the accounts of witnesses, while undergoing an evolution:

  • It appears generally accompanied, generally of two others.
  • a woman is sometimes present in the group.
  • the date of the visit is not automatically the shortly after the “  vision  ” or of the “  rencontre  ”, but can take place later several months.
  • the reason for the visit clearly is often not expressed. The remarks can be without relationship with the event, incoherent, or present a sexual connotation. In any event, the witness remains certain that the visit is in connection with the event.
  • Often, until the beginning of the Years 1990, it wears clothing and drives a car of the end of the Années 1940, recognized fact like anachronistic or odd by the witnesses.
  • It is often interpreted as being itself a Extraterrestre.

Others

The men in black is a nickname given to the Jésuites or the special rapid deployment forces, like the RAID.
