Men and wolves ( Uomini E lupi ) is a Franco-Italian film carried out by Giuseppe De Santis, left in 1956.

Synopsis

In the Abruzzi, mountainous region of central Italy, severe and strange country, the herds abound and with the approach of the winter, the echo of alarming howls of wolves are reflected in the valley. The owners of cattle, to fight against this plague, call upon the louvetiers, hunters of wolves, broken with the guet, the hard combat, with loneliness, they are savage and independent mountain dwellers. When it killed a wolf, the louvetier walks the skin of the animal of village in village. The villagers reward it by offering gifts in cash, flour, wine, bread, ham to him,… etc It is by a hard morning that Giovanni, louvetier, arrive at the village of Vischio accompanied by his Teresa wife and her ten year old son.

Little time afterwards, Ricuccio also arrives at the village, off-hand, the barded chest of cartridges, armed with a rifle, inhabited manners insolentes, under the semi-sparkling glance of the ladies.

Under the glance mocker of Ricuccio which had nothing to do with a true louvetier, Giovanni, being wary prepares its soft foods and traps, and to ensure one more advantageous following day for its family, digs a hole covered with branches. A she-wolf taken with the trap is able to get clear and kills Giovanni at the time of a fierce combat. Rinuccio transports the body of Giovanni to the village and to avenge it promises to kill the wolves and more particularly the fatal she-wolf. The days pass, and a Pasqualino morning the son of Teresa captures in wood, two wolf cubs. Ricuccio manufactures a cage, but very quickly the villagers realize that the she-wolf, their mother, worries and obsessed does not agree to give up its small ......

Film which puts in emergence the drama of proletarian, cold, hardened people, accustomed to the hard combat of the winter and while emphasizing, material and human misery mountain villages which have other resources only the cattle breeding.
