Men against

the men against ( Uomini contro ) is a film italiano-Yugoslavian produced and carried out by Francesco Rosi in 1970 on an episode of the conflict italo-Austrian at the time of the First World War according to a novel of Emilio Lussu One year sull' Altipiano . At its exit, in Italy, it was the object of polemics and a lawsuit for " denigration of Armée" who ended in a payment.

Synopsis

The young person and idealistic lieutenant Sassù, left the flower with rifle, are interfered with carnages a war of position. The engagements are held in an mountainous area close to Asiago in the area of the Haut-Adige, Italy. The division of the Leone general, in a movement of panic, gave up an important position which the general will bait to try to begin again. All the attempts, impromptu or carried out with insufficient means, will fail, including the last where the artillery support finally granted by the staff will massacre the wave of assault of the infantrymen to have badly regulated his shooting, incident which has occurred in all the armies.

This film denounces the useless horrors for the catch of the hill of Montefiore under the orders of a general unlucky person more than inefficient (who does not hesitate, on the occasion, to expose itself in first line), the mutinies, the executions which follow, events extremely comparable with the Mutineries of 1917 in the French Armies and English. It should be noted that with 2800 soldiers shot for the example, Italy holds the record of 14-18 (England 1800, France 2500 judgments including 600 carried out).

Historical context

At the beginning of the First World War, Italy remains neutral in spite of its membership of the Triple Alliance. May 3rd, 1915, she denounces this treaty but the debate makes rage as for the entry in war. They are finally the partisans of the war, under the influence of Gabriele d' Annunzio, which carries it and Italy launches out in the long series of battles of Isonzo against the Austria. The goal of the Italian patriots is to join together the area of Trieste to perfect the Italian unit.

These battles, as that of the Ortigara Mount which is held in a very broken area, will last until October 1917 without decisive result, in spite of hundreds of thousands of killed on both sides. Terrible conditions of survival in the trenches, the use of gases and the flame throwers, the flood of fire and the image of impéritie of the senior officers will lead the soldiers of the Catanzaro Brigade to mutiner than the summer 1917 close to Santa Maria Longa.
