Memory 44

Mémoire 44 is a Board game created by Richard Borg in 2004 and published by Days off Wonder. It was developed under the high patronage of the Mission of the 60e Anniversary of the Normandy landing and Release of France with an aim of transmitting the memory of the big events of the Second world war which are the unloadings of 1944 and the Libération of France by creating an at the same time ludic and teaching product. Thanks to detailed scenarios and with a system of at the same time simple and realistic play, the players can reproduce the decisive battles of the war.

Conceived for 2 players, but being able to accommodate to 8 participants, as from 12 years, approximately an hour.

Rules of the game

Mémoire 44 is appeared as a set of figurines evolving/moving on a flexible plate to two slopes (side " campagne" and side " plage"), on which one has the hexagons representing of the particular grounds (forests, villages, hills, rivers, etc). While respecting the scenarios inspired of the historical battles that the booklet of rules proposes, the players place the figurines corresponding to their units.

The victory returns to the first which, to the favor of its troop movements, manages to gain the number of medals necessary. A medal is obtained by eliminating an unfavourable unit or by gaining an objective (to occupy a city, for example).

With this intention, each player must in turn operate his units (infantry, armoured tanks and artillery, each type having its own characteristics of movement and shooting) and solve his combat using special dice indicating if it touches, lack or force to beat a retreat his adversary.

Extensions

Days off Wonder published four French/English bilingual extensions:

  • Ground Pack /Grounds, 2005
  • Eastern Face /Front Is, 2005
  • Plateau deserted winter/, 2005
  • Pacific Theater /Batailles of the Pacific, 2006
The first extension, Ground Pack , is a whole of hexagons and badges various making it possible to play on new grounds. One counts also new badges of units respecting the historical reality of military decorations of the Second world war. A booklet proposes several scenarios being held between 1944 and 1945.

The second, Front Is , brings the figurines of the Russian army (infantry, armoured tanks, artillery) and of new hexagons often corresponding to the snow-covered grounds. The booklet of rules makes some modifications imposed to the Russian player and proposes scenarios being held as from 1942.

The last extension is a new plate of play also presenting two faces, one snow-covered (winter, for the scenarios of the Russian face) and the other representing the desert (for the combat of North Africa).

The extension Battles of the Pacific/Pacific Theater is same format as the extensions Terrain Pack and Eastern Front; it contains a Japanese army (always three same types of units) and a booklet of scenarios. The editor also announces the availability, later, of a complete whole of charts summarizing all the points of basic rules of the game and his extensions.

Lastly, 2007 should see arriving a case especially designed for the arrangement of the play and its extensions. It should also contain figurines of planes making it possible to play of the air forces jointly to the Batailles extension of the Pacific.

This case was to leave in September 2007, but Days Of Wonder somewhat modified the plan envisaged. The company announces the nearest exit (already available in précommande) of its very last extension, Air Pack , which contains the figurines of planes and founds new rules of aerial combat. These rules apply to all the scenarios and not only to those of the extension Pacific Theater . Moreover, the extension Air Pack will comprise a summary of the 64 scenarios of Memory 44, as well as new charts of play.

The case of arrangement announced by Days Of Wonder (that it is necessary well to dissociate from the extension Air Pack ) will be altered and will leave probably later. On its Internet site, the company announces information to come on this subject.
