Memmelshoffen

Memmelshoffen is a common French, located in the department of the the Low-Rhine and the area Alsace.

The common one belongs to the Regional natural park of the Vosges of North.

Geography

Located in the under-Vosgean hills of Hardt, leant with the solid masses of Hochwald and Langenberg, the village is localized in the north of the department of the Low-Rhine.

History

Already in 1274, at the time of Saint Louis, the lords de Fleckenstein and Puller de Hohenbourg have the village. In 1351, the village passes in joint ownership to the lords de Dahn and from Fleckenstein-Bickenbach (Cleebourg). In the year of grace 1435, Lichtenberg transmit their possession to Memelshoffen with Wirich von Hohenburg, vassal of the archbishop of Cologne. From 1543 to 1550, Fleckenstein, other vassal of the archbishop of Cologne, go to introduce the Réforme. They will be owners of the village until in 1720. In 1693, the Catholic religion reappears. In 1720, to the extinction of the line of Fleckenstein, the baronnie of Soultz passes to the Rohan-Soubise. In 1789 the first book of the municipal council of Memmelshoffen is written.

As of 1798, the village becomes an autonomous commune, consequence of the French revolution of 1789. From 1940 to 1945, it will be ultimate German incorporation. The village there will lose its autonomy and will be attached of office to Keffenach.

In the center of the village draws up the war memorial built in 1960.

The church, built in 1780 on a preceding construction almost in ruin, is renovated and increased in 1861. Built out of sandstone, its cover is made tiles punts, slates. The table of holy Catherine who decorates the church since 1850 is renovated first once in 1932 and one second time in 2000.

History of Franz Anton Brendel: bishop swearer of the Constitution

His/her father Mathias Brendel was born on June 23rd, 1699 in Walthüren (Ostfranken), it married Johanna Franziska Wilk originating in Walschbronn in Lorraine. His/her Franz-Anton son was born in Lohr amndt Hand on October 4th, 1735. He grew in Memmelshoffen, whereas his/her father was controller of Prince de Hessen Darmstadt. He studied during one year with Öwisheim (Country of Bade) then attended of 1750 to 1754 the college of Haguenau. Then he learned French in Pont-à-Mousson and studied theology with the seminar of Strasbourg. He was vicar for six months with Huttenheim and then cleaned with Soultz-under-Forests in 1761. He became preacher with the Cathedral of Strasbourg in 1765 and taught the canon law at the episcopal university as from 1769. Brendel took part in the political assemblies at the time of the Revolution and lent oath on February 20th, 1791, although it signed a declaration with the monks of Strasbourg against the civil constitution.

After its election as a constitutional bishop, it obtained the dedication on March 13rd, 1791 of the hands of the Gobels bishop to Paris.

November 20th, 1793, the Cathedral was transformed into Temple of the Reason, Brendel was withdrawn and was assigned with residence at the University. After its release in 1794, discouraged, it transmitted its resignation and became archivist of the department of the low-Rhine. He died the 3 meadow one of year 8 (May 23rd, 1799), at 64 years.

Its funeral was celebrated by constitutional priests in the Church Saint Pierre the Young person of Strasbourg.
