The 27 Member States of the European Union are different sizes and present varied modes of institutional organization. Together, they form the European Union, a space of almost 500 million inhabitants and to: 3930000 km ².

This list of the Member States of the European Union includes/understands the States founders and the States which successively are attached to it:

• territories of the 27 Member States: Germany, Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Cyprus, Denmark, Spain, Estonia, Finland, France, Greece, Hungary, Ireland, Italy, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, Netherlands, Poland, Portugal, Romania, the United Kingdom, Slovakia, Slovenia, Sweden, Czech Republic

• recent Fastenings: January 1st, 2007, the Bulgaria and the Romania integrated the European Union.

Exclusions

For historical and geographical reasons precise are excluded from this list:

• Italian territories of Livigno and Campione d' Italia,
• the overseas territories of the France of overseas, (New Caledonia, French Polynesia, Southern and antarctic Lands French, Wallis and Futuna),

Community tax territory

It is defined by the interior of the country . In however certain national territories are excluded of which in particular:

• the French departments of Overseas (DOM): Guadeloupe, Martinique, Guyana, Reunion,
• Italian territories of Livigno and Campione d' Italia and territorial water of the Lake Lugano.

Synoptic table

For each Member State:

• after the name of the country is specified its code ISO 3166-1 alpha-2 (recommended by the OPOCE, office of Publication of the European Communities), except for Greece and the United Kingdom, for which initials EL and the U.K. are recommended.
• the name of the Head of the State is followed of that of the head of government.
• various local levels of authority
• the number of seats to the the European Parliament.
